If you're inclined towards discussion, why don't you tell us a little about your current fandom(s) and what drew you to them?

For discussion: Does writing ever surprise you? Do you ever catch yourself writing something that you didn't anticipate--be it a plot twist you didn't see coming or a trope that you never expected to write yourself?

For discussion: what's the most difficult part of writing something for you? Is it coming up with ideas? Figuring out the perfect first line? Or the snappy close? For me, it's a combination of coming up with titles--I hate that part--and sustaining momentum during the middle part of the story, after the joy of starting a story has worn off and before the momentum of the final act catches me up. How about you?

It's time to sign up for the June WIP challenge!

Some people join the challenge midmonth, or comment on check-in posts without signing up, which is fine -- I'm glad there's a way for the challenge to be useful in a variety of ways.

But for those of you who find the commitment of signing up useful, please leave a comment with the below information.

Signups will be open until the end of May.

  • Level of challenge: 1 chapter, 1000 words, 1 fic finished, whatever you like
  • Fandom(s) involved: if you know at this point
  • What you're looking for from the challenge: this could be as vague or specific as you like: someone to be accountable to, someone to remind you to write, someone to bounce ideas off, etc.
  • What you could offer other participants yourself: ditto!
  • How people should contact you: DW message, e-mail, IM etc.
  • Time zone: useful for seeing who might be up for a writing session at a time convenient to you

Copypaste below:

I couldn't continue to run this challenge without assistance with the daily check-in posts. Many thanks to everyone who's helped with the check-ins before!

Please let me know if you'd be interested in helping out. A week per person would be ideal (I usually assign weeks running Sunday-Saturday just for consistency). I'm happy to help come up with suggestions for discussion topics (& Friday or Saturday is usually the general chat/snippet/beta-seeking etc. post).

(& if you've completed a fic through the challenge, don't forget our collection on AO3! If you need AO3 invites, let me know.)

I hope this okay, I just feel like I need some sort of fellow writer advice.

So I am currently struggling with my Star Trek into Darkness fanfic. My problem is that the first 5-6 chapters I have written from my main characters POV (the guy in my icon). It's hard and eventually I really need to switch POV ... but my concern like when?

Would you find it odd if there was suddenly after so many chapters one with a different POV?

I think it would be easier for me to write from a different POV every other chapter.

Therefore I am contemplating re-writing chapter 4, as this is the first one with another main character. After that maybe make it a general rule to write from her POV every other chapter?

If you're feeling inclined to talk about writing today, let's consider characterization: what sorts of little details do you have to know about the characters you write, whether they make it into the story or not? In my case, I don't feel like I really know a character until I've figured out their taste in drinks--are they tea people? Coffee people? Do they drink beer or scotch or frilly umbrella drinks, or are they teetotallers? I may never include this information in a story (lies: many of my stories feature people sitting around drinking things and talking) but I have to get it settled for myself regardless. How about you--what sorts of things do you use to settle your sense of a character?

Morning everyone, hope the last couple of days have good for you. Sorry I missed yesterday's post, I had a double shift and crashed out when I finally got home.

No new words for me yet but I'm not too fussed about that at the moment because I have a few pages to type up when I have a spare hour.

Hi everyone, hope you got some words down today.

I added around 800 words to the fic I started yesterday, I'll likely add another 200-300 words and try to figure out where the gaps in my infertility research notes are before I'm away to my bed.

Discussion topic: apps. Most of us have got a smartphone or a tablet and of course use a variety of apps. Do you use an app for your writing? Do you to stick to using pen and paper?

I have Evernote on my phone and tablet, I've used it a few times and it is useful but I can't always be bothered to open it and read through my saved files. I do always have a notebook and pen in my bag so that I can jot down anything that pops up, the only downside to it is reading through them and trying to decipher my atrocious handwriting.

Hi everyone, hope you all had a good day with your writing.

I wrote around 1000 words of fic from my notes before I went to work this evening, I am quite pleased with that because it has given me a starting point for Morningside, one of my big Taggart fics (show is eating my brain!)

Discussion topic: revisiting old fandoms. Do you ever revisit your old fandoms? Do you still write fic for them?

I recently rewatched all 13 eps of Killer Instinct and I enjoyed a lot more this time around because I wasn't wanting to write fic for every little thing. Of course I still adore Jack/Danielle as a ship but I found myself considering other pairing options that I missed out on at first.

My local library have all the series and at the moment I'm working my way through all of Star Trek, although I've always enjoyed all eras of the show, I have never written anything longer than a drabble because I find the chracters difficult to write but I would like to have something longer written for any of series one day.

Hi everyone, I hope you've all had a productive day.

I managed to write a couple of pages of notes yesterday during a longer than expected wait for one of my connections in Edinburgh and today I've added more to those notes. I should be able to get a couple of scenes written from them later in the week.

Discussion topic: spoilers. When it comes to spoilers do you avoid them or accept that they are part of fandom life?

I do accept them as a part of fandom life but I also tend to avoid them for the shows and movies I want to see and the books on my to read list. At the moment I am trying to avoid everything to do with Iron Man 3, Star Trek Into Darkness and The Fall because I haven't seen them yet and my reading list is now empty because I've caught up with the books I had on it.

Lately we did not had that many writing sessions. I guess it is the season or something - but if anyone here also wishes to do more writing sessions, maybe we can find an evening or two this week?

Just let me know, except for tomorrow when I am going to rewatch Star Trek into Darkness, I should be available every evening (GMT)

So any takers?

(Bah I posted this to my journal and was like: really nobody is interested anymore? *lol* please prove me wrong)

I more than likely won't get anything done at all today as I am going to be spending most of it travelling back home to Aberdeen.

Discussion topic: Least favourite writing places. We all have favourite places to sit and write but what about the places where the writin g just doesn't happen. Where don't you like writing?

I cannot write whenever I travel because most of my long journeys are road trips and it isn't the most comfortable way to get a few words out, I also found it difficult to write on train journeys too. The same when I'm at my mum's because I feel like her and my step-dad are watching what I'm doing and I can't really concentrate too good either because the TV is rather distracting these days.

Discussion topic: visiting family. When you're visiting family and friends do you ever make time to write or do you wait and see what happens.

This weekend I've come home to Leeds to my mum's for a wee break and since I arrived I have had very little time to write and I'm starting to feel a little out of the loop with my writing but I will have a couple of hours before bed to attempt something and maybe an hour or so in the morning before I need to leave for the bus home.

My current project is for Not Prime Time, an anonymous fic exchange, so I can't talk about it in great detail. I'm near the minimum word count though. I'm still not sure what's going to happen in it, so I suspect it will be quite a bit longer.

Today's discussion question: We all have our preferred fandoms and our preferred characters. We also all have fandoms and characters we can't face. Do you have fandoms that you'd like to write but can't? Are there characters you don't feel you can write?

I'd like to write more for long TV shows. I just find the size of the canon overwhelming. There's so much to track, and reviewing it all to take notes requires so much time (that or a really good index). Unless there's a wiki, I'm mostly too intimidated even to try.

As to characters, there's one from the fandom I write most often that I simply don't get. I know his canon, but I don't really understand it in the way I'd need to to write him. I like to think I can handle a challenge, but in the decade or so I've been writing this fandom, I haven't dared to write about him.
[personal profile] the_rck
I keep intending to write and sleeping instead. I think I need more caffeine (or possibly sugar). I have an exchange fic to write, so I need to get my act together quickly.

Today's discussion question: Do you have a preferred genre to write? It could be anything-- case fic, curtain fic, science fiction, angst, anything. Are there any genres you can't write at all?

I tend to like writing character pieces with some introspection. I don't do it all of the time, however. I also write angsty stories fairly often but, again, not all of the time. I can't write fluff of humor to save my life.

Today's discussion question: Is there anything that you think makes your writing distinctive? That is, are there themes you return to over and over, are there phrases you use frequently? Could someone spot that a story was yours if it was posted anonymously?

I don't think that my own writing is really that distinctive. I can't really tell though. I'm too close to it. I'm also bad at identifying authors from bits of text.

Today's discussion question-- When you write fanfic, do you try to preserve the tone and style of the canon as you write? Why or why not?

For me, this depends on the fandom. I'm more likely to try to keep the tone and style of the canon when writing for small fandoms than I am when writing larger ones. I think that, for smaller fandoms, I'm trying to give more of what was great about canon. With larger fandoms, I tend to feel that other authors have already explored the territory closest to canon. The space for stories there is further afield.
