Daily Check-In: Day 22

Good afternoon! How did your writing session go?
  • It was great!
  • It went well.
  • It was pretty good.
  • Could be better.
  • I didn't get any writing done. (whether life was hectic, taking a break, or writer's block)
  • I thought about writing this week.
Discussion: What writing program/material is your go to when writing fanfiction? It could be for your first draft, jotting down ideas and plot points, or the final version of your fanfic; doesn't matter as long as it was written down.

Could be better.

I use Libre Office and Jarte on the computer and I tend to have an A5 notebook and pen for getting ideas down and also for outlining when I'm at home or out and about.

LOL it is going badly!! I am so out of practise and it shows. I have thought a lot about writing, and not a lot of actual words being written down.

I use scrivener 99.9% of the time, synced between devices (usually tablet for the actual writing)... I like having all my ideas in one file of 6000 files :P

Despite losing any solid productivity during the day to wildly fluctuating pain levels, I wrote 50 words, bringing me to a 21-day writing streak.

If I'm on my computer: Scrivener. I make one yearly main file with lots of little sub folders and documents in it to keep track. I make sure I keep it updated, even if I don't actually write at the computer (since dealing with the "wildly fluctuating pain levels", it's rare for me to be able to sit long enough to get anything typed up).

Most of my writing I do on my phone, since the "swipe to type" keyboard feels enough like hand writing to pass in my brain. I used to write almost exclusively in Google Docs, but this month I started using Ellipsus (write.ellipsus.com) to test it out as a GDocs replacement. And, tbh? I cannot recommend it highly enough!

It runs on any browser, syncs between everything easily, and doesn't scrape your fics for data! They are building an app, but it also works as one of those "faux/browser app" things on phones and tablets. You can make folders and individual documents, you can share anything with whoever you want, and they do a cool thing of keeping separate collaborative drafts so you don't lose anything in case somebody accidentally deletes part of the draft. Also, when I started using them at the beginning of June, they had 6 different color themes, including "Pride", which has now been renamed "Pride light" because they just added a 7th theme "Pride dark"! Finally! I can be goth AND gay at once!

(Current list of themes: Light, Sepia, Nature, Dark, Ultra dark, Pride light, Pride dark)

ALSO, also, they have fandom/fanfiction related templates that create automatic copies for you when you first open them, including AU Planning, Canon Divergence, World Building Planning, TTRPG World Building and Lore, Fandom Ship, and a whole flock of character related templates.

I sound like product placement, I know, but I swear I'm just so excited by having a good substitute for GDocs. 😭😍
