As a reader I tend to enjoy writing that gets a little purple, myself, particularly if the setting or characters are supposed to have a strong sensory impact.
Although, I admit the phrase 'purple prose' is one that sometimes confuses me, because it means different things to different people. When I think of purple prose I think of writing that is trying to be highly ornate or descriptive, but fails and becomes dull. But sometimes 'purple prose' gets extended to any kind of prose that isn't direct.
