When you write do you write linearly, from point A to point B to point C, or do you skip around and write bits from different parts of the story out of order?

I a linear writer. I very rarely write out of order. I think a big part of it is that, until I get there, I seldom know for sure what's going to happen. The one exception is that I've drafted the final chapter of my long WIP, Rheotaxis. When I get to that point, the draft will probably get gutted and rewritten from scratch, but I wanted to know what I was aiming for.

I hardly ever write linearly. I often write scenes and snippets and entire chapters out of order (right now I've got about 20,000 words in future scenes for my big WIP, in no particular order). Sometimes I end up having to change them pretty drastically when I finally catch up, but I'd rather get down what's in my head when it's in my head than risk losing it.

I tend to write out of sequence and make changes once I get caught up. The only time I write linearly is when I'm working with something very specific from canon.
