Also, a few of my characters are big schemers and plotting out their intricate plans has been a royal pain
Ha, I can imagine! I tend to go for feeeeeelings fic & am stymied often when faced w/actual plot (as many of my ideas have been over the past few months: WTF brain? I can't do this!) -- so I bet actual plot combined w/schemers would be quite tricky.
& sympathies on the small fandom thing -- it can be really discouraging to get little or no feedback. :/
