Discussion: editing. how much editing do you do before you post something? do you use a beta?

Likewise on "it depends on what I'm working on!" I'm currently deep in edits that are taking a very long time but I'd be sad if everything took that long, haha.

I reread what I am working on often and edit as I go, so by the time I am done, it is pretty ready. I used to use a friend as a beta, but I have some experience with copy editing so now I just edit it all myself -- it's faster that way!

Oh, that's really nice! Did you take a copy-editing course, or would you have tips for learning?

I did not take a course, I think the ability just developed naturally somehow. I have always been good with grammar and spelling, and having a feel for how to put together a sentence is helpful. One thing I look for is if I use the same word too many times close together.

That's really cool, thank you for the reply :)

I typically edit as I go (fast drafting and I are not yet friends), but, once finished writing, I will usually let something sit for a time and then go back and do a full reread as my editing.

I'm very much of the "no beta we die like mne" variety. Ostensibly, it's because I am impatient creature, but secretly it's because I'm terrified of being a bother to anyone.

I think editing as you go and ending up with something that's finished and can be shared is super cool :D

(Even if, as you mentioned before, it can feel like it takes forever!!)
