I know we have talked about favourite writing resources before, but we have some new faces and possibly new resources so let's do it again. What is your current favourite writing resource? Online, offline, doesn't matter! (though we would like links it it's online! :D )

I actually wrote yesterday (about 1200 words which finishes the story) and posted today in the wee hours of the morning, so that counts, right? ;-) I also did some research today for a new fic I'm working on for February. I still have a one shot to start and finish before the month ends, if possible, but I'm very pleased to have done as much as I did after a long dry spell, so it's definitely a "great" day.

One of my favorite writing resources is the Online Etymology Dictionary at http://www.etymonline.com/. Most of my stories take place in an older time period, so I want to be sure my vocabulary is proper for the period. This site helps me avoid using words that are too modern -- and is also helpful in finding alternatives for those modern words. Another site I have open when I write is http://thesaurus.com/. When I can't think of a word or when I need an alternative to a word I am using too often, I go to the online Thesaurus and I'm all set.

Another resource I can't live without when writing is Jarte (go to http://www.jarte.com/ to find out how this word processor works). It's the perfect word processor for me for writing, because I like having things open in tabs and it installs on a flash drive for portability. I found out about it through this community and I've never used anything else since.

I actually just did write a very few words, but I think they were good 'uns. :-)

Since I write a lot of Harry Potter, one of my favorite resources is The 50 Commonest and Rarest British Surnames. Invaluable for naming the OCs that flesh out the stories. And because it's an obsession for me to put my stories in a real place, I use Google Maps extensively. A place with a good-sized river and some steep-ish hills within an easy hour's broom-flight of London? No problem.

I wrote ~4K today and am pretty proud of myself.

My favourite writing aid is written? kitten. The kittens are pretty motivating.

I've been slowly editing Twice Unjust I'm only fixing spellings and some OOCness for now. Will likely spend a bit of time fixing the mistakes with my Glasgow and Aberdeen geography (bit embarrassed by those, especially the Aberdeen ones). I need to print it off and go over it all with a pen, that can wait a bit longer.

I sometimes use LibreOffice (it's free) http://www.libreoffice.org it is similar to OpenOffice. I have it for when MS Word craps out on me. I also have Jarte, think that's been mentioned already.

I managed one sprint today and did 659 words. It's not much, but I also got some research done.

My favourite fandom-specific resources are these wikis:

Harry Potter: the HP Wiki and the HP Lexicon.

Star Trek: Memory Alpha, for definitely-canon Film & TV details and Memory Beta, for not-quite-canon details from spin-offs, books and games.

And for general research, I like these comms on LJ: fanfic_med (medical and injury advice), military_beta (for current and historical military details), and little_details (for everything).
