Check in: Tuesday 19th

Hope you're all having a good day writing or otherwise :)

I have some time before I need to leave for a job interview this afternoon so I'm going to be doing more editing and will be making a few notes for a one-shot to see how something I want to use in a much bigger fic is going to work.

Discussion topic: disability resources. I know we only had a resource sharing post a few weeks ago, but what about resources for disabled writers like screen readers, dictionary add-ons etc. If you have a disability, what programs do you use?

I have dyslexia and dyspraxia, and I use TextHelp with LibreOffice (after I customised all of the deafult settings), and The Sage external dictionary. TextHelp lets me change the programme screen to green (that colour makes reading a lot easier for me) and it autocorrects commonly misspelled words, homophones and confusables (example: there/their/they’re), lots of other things too, and there is a read-aloud feature that works with most programs and browsers but I had to turn it off because the voices irritated me. I also find that having The Sage is the same as keeping paperback copies of the OED and OET near my laptop because the definitions are as in-depth as the Oxford, and I do like the anagram feature it has because that's how I spell some words before I get it right :)

Dragon Naturally Speaking transcription software! Sitting up at a desk for long stretches is not fun with my issues at all, so being able to scribble a draft and then read it to the computer is super helpful.

I'm sick so I'm not managing much that's useful. If my head clears before the day is done, I might be able to get some thoughts together and maybe write a few things!

I don't have a disability, though more and more I am appreciating any program that allows me to change the background color on the screen. White is getting more and more annoying to my old eyes!

I like the sound of The Sage, I use a dictionary and thesaurus constantly as I write, and this sounds pretty useful. Nice that it works on a USB drive, as well.

Finished chapter 7 yesterday and wrote over 3000 words. I also realised that my old chapter restrictions are no good for the rewrite. Chapter 7 used to have 2150 words and now it has 8883 - somehow I feel I owe potential new readers a break. Besides it is called bad dreams and the bad dream only occurs after about 6000 words - not good.
