How do you get started writing? This can refer either to starting a new story or new chapter or to starting a writing session.

I tend to put on music first. Sometimes, I get myself a snack or something to drink. Focusing to start always seems hard until I actually start typing. Even then, I make false starts and have to abandon whole paragraphs that don't work. I usually tell myself that I only have to manage a few words at a time, and that makes starting easier than if I think about trying to finish completely.

I always have a cold drink before I start and for actual writing it depends on the project. One that I enjoy gets worked on before my less enjoyable projects. It sometimes is difficult to get started on anything if I've had a brain zapping day at work and it's those days where editing is preferable to adding new words.

I wrote two pre-canon fics and I'm about to start editing a chapter of an ongoing fic, I just have to organise my chapter notes for that one..
