Does music help you write? Do you need silence or do you like background noise?

I like having something playing in the background while I write, either music or something on TV that doesn't require my full attention (PBS Kids' shows are surprisingly good for this). I try to make playlists for long writing projects, but I'm never entirely happy with them.

I can't listen to music when I write--I end up concentrating on the music and not my writing. ^^; I do find some background noise helpful, though. And for some reason, having police procedural shows on while working tends to lead to my most productive writing sessions.
