WIP checkin--day 26

Hello, ficcers! Zuko [personal profile] terajk here. How goes the fic?:

Did you:

  • Write

  • Edit

  • Send to beta

  • Plan/research

  • Procrastinate

  • Something else I will explain in comments.

For discussion:

Image description: Top caption: "Word count of epic fic you've been working on all day" (fanfic flamingo) "Bottom caption: 522 words."

Does your fic grow exponentially? Is every word like pulling teeth? Some combination of the both?

Worked a little on the challenge fic, did a bit more critiquing for my CP, and started revisions on a piece of original fiction.

My fics do tend to grow, especially when I'm trying to write a drabble.

I experience both phenomena at various times.

Just wanted to add that I'm pleased with the way the revisions are going though I'm only about four pages in.

I experience both phenomena at various times. Beautifully put. I second this. Sometimes it seems that when you're trying to write within a word count, like for a drabble, the fic insists on being longer; however when you've got to write at least another five k for a big bang fic, the words won't come.

Yay for working on your challenge fic! *gives thumbs up*

Fic happened today! I finally forced myself to stop procrastinating, and after a bit of teeth-pulling, I wrote 1,780 words for my Big Bang! And it only seemed to take half the day... ;-) Maybe I'll procrastinate on doing that RL editing I ought to be doing and keep going on the fic -- strike while the iron is hot, so to speak.

These flamingos know me well. ;-) It's one or the other with me! Usually, it's like pulling teeth to get started, but once I get going, it flows and grows at a nice rate.

Woot to fic happening! Sometimes we just need to sit down and get that bunny hopping. :)

I pulled out my remaining help_japan fic & edited it a little bit & wrote some more on it. Hallelujah! I've been avoiding this one, partly b/c I'd been having trouble, partly b/c my fannish energy has been so v. v. v. (er) monogamous over the past month or two, it's been hard to go back to the fandom for that one.

My fics start out at a brisk pace -- I can churn out loads of words for the beginnings of stories. It's after that things get tricky sometimes. ^^;;

Go you for working on that fic you've been avoiding! From my personal experience, I usually realize that what I've been dreading about working on XYZ story is really not that big of a deal. And yet, I always forget that. :P

Anyhoo, I hope you can get that story all spiffied out.

The first draft of my wip is back from my beta. More research is required.

Right now writing my wip's like pulling teeth. But it's always the case when I'm editing my wip.

*wanders in from a weekend away* I actually didn't do as much writing as I wanted to do, but I did get some solid editing done in the evenings. Assuming no more major changes, my queer_fest fic should be right to post on Wednesday. My AU big bang fic is sitting just under 13k. It's about ... 1/2 way through the plot? Maybe? I should be able to get enough down for a finished rough draft by July 1st, but it'll be sketchy and not really properly finished. I'm still working out the progress and structure.

It's a combination of both, depending on how inspired I am with the fic. Sometimes I can churn out several thousand words, no problem. Other times, I get stuck and it's a struggle to get a few hundred words. But yeah, depends on the fic. Some want to be written far easier than others.

Editing is just as important as writing. Especially when you're so close to posting it. \o/

I... don't think I can really generalize about how my fics grow, at the moment. Ever since MaNoWriMo, I've just been all over the map in terms of writing habits.

(Although the DS9 novzat - 'scuse me, novelization - that's slowly turning from a quick-written and blathery first draft into a much shorter second draft seems pretty familiar. *g* OTOH, the 1500 words of inexplicable stuff I never would have expected to write? Highly puzzling.)

I wasn't able to get any writerly thing done yesterday because I was out for most of the day and one of my friends had a bad day and I tried cheering her up. *sighs* Well actually I looked up a character's fandom wiki page that I plan to do a one shot of her soon and thought on a couple ideas, so that counts for something, haha.

Oh man, the fanfic flamingo is so right, LOL. There were many fics that were meant to be short that turned long and fics that I know will require a few scenes but I wasn't able to get much written. I think it depends on the fic and if I feel I can write that scene well or if I'm very anxious about it.

Well, you kinda did a bit of research there so, the day wasn't a complete wash. :)

Edited, edited, edited. Oh, and edited one big bang.

Wrote about 300 words for the other one.

Usually, my fic grows at a steady pace. I think this is because, most of the time, I have something of a general idea of what the story will be like.

Well, that is, unless I'm writing something for an auction winner in which case it takes me eons to get a rough draft done. :-/
