Check In: Day 13, Wednesday

Oops! I almost forgot to put this up. Sorry for the delay.

How's the writing going today? I haven't done anything but think about my stories and nap a bit. I still have hope that I'll write later.

Did you:

Write?
Edit?
Send to beta?
Post?
Think about your story?
Do something else?
Take a rest?

Today's discussion question: When you write, do you need silence or do you prefer background noise? What about music? Is it helpful or distracting? Are there certain types of music that work for you?

I like having music as background noise. Sometimes, I even sing along as I write. It works better if it's stuff I know really well and don't have to think about. I have playlists in iTunes for two of my long WIP. Sometimes, I like to have a DVD going in the background, but that can be iffy. It can't be something that I need to give much attention to. My best luck in that direction was with the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes episodes.

Wednesday I posted.

I can't write with background music, because I like being an active listener to music and I can't listen and write at the same time. I'm pretty much a set of eyes on the screen and fingers on the keyboard when I write. Any sort of ambient background noise doesn't bother me as long as I'm not actually expected to pay attention to it. Otoh, when I do listen to music it can often put me in a creative groove and give me ideas for new stories or ways to work out the roadblocks in existing ones.

I've spent most of the week editing even though it is slow going but having a print out of my fic is definitely helping because I'm picking up a lot more than I was when I was just scrolling down Word and using TextHelp. It's the pacing I need to somehow try and fix because some things are happening too quickly, others too slowly and I can't work out what's going to work better for those scenes :(

Today is research and planning/outlining for a different fic but I'm going to hold off on starting that for a wee while, also need a canon refresh because there was a few things that need to be explored a lot better than they did on show :)

I always have music on so it's not really a distraction for me, most of the time it's one of the local radio stations or my ipod, iTunes when I need to charge my ipod. I do have some playlists, although only two of them are for fics. TV was a major distraction for me and now I don't have one I get a lot more done, not just on my fic but in general too.
