If you're feeling like a bit of discussion, why don't you tell us a little bit about how you get yourself in the mood to write fanfic. Do you review your canon, read other people's fic, talk about it with friends, or do something else?

How I get in the mood to write depends on what I'm working on. For something short, a review of canon (or at least parts of canon) helps. For something long, reading what I've already written works reasonably well and helps me remember details. I do find that talking about what I'm trying to write can help me shake loose ideas when I'm stuck. It's just a luxury I seldom have. I don't find music particularly inspiring. I like to listen to it as background noise, but it doesn't tend to push me to write.

On the one hand: my characters are speaking to me! YAY!

On the other hand: what they're saying is REWRITE THE LAST TWO CHAPTERS I AM NOT THAT STUPID.

Tiny bit of editing when I got home, could do more of it but today has been a bit crap, my uni placement sucks.

I tend to review canon and make a few notes as I'm watching so that I have reference points to keep me on track. When I'm trying out different pairings and new fandoms, I write a few test pieces, usually drabbles, that only stay in my notebook, just to see if I can write them.

I can't read other people's fic when I want to write.

I've spent the last couple of days shuffling my projects around in Scapple (a sort-of mindmap/freeform text editor from the people who made Scrivener), and it's the best thing that's happened to my brain in a long time. It's only a beta, but I have a really good feeling about this.
