Apologies for missing yesterday, the combination of a job application and a cold meant my brain went off for a wander.

Today's discussion topic: Are there any words or phrases that you keep finding yourself using over and over again in your writing?

Yes, words like "just" and adverbs. I try to edit most of them out before I post anything.

I've been running about like a mad thing all day making final arrangements for when the family visit. I'm planning on getting some writing done this evening, I have something short that I'd like to finish and post in the next day or so.

I seem to use 'yeah' and 'and' a lot. I do try to catch as many as I can during editing.

Woot, I wrote added big chunk to my crossover today. The words flowed well and it was fun, but I'm a little sad that I didn't have time for my yuletide fic because of it.

Yeah, I used variations on "think/thought" a lot, and in romantic fic "look", "glance" etc, especially the nouns. In English, I also add lots of "Well"s to direct speech, whereas in German, I overuse "ja" in speech.

I made a crucial and painful decision that a fic I've been angsting over must be released into the wild to fend for itself, even if it's not perfect.

There are a lot of words and turns of phrase that I overuse. Usually I catch them as I'm going, because it's important to me to keep the language in my story diverse and interesting. Otherwise I get bored while writing it. I don't think I notice all of my writing tics or fixations, and I have a sneaking suspicion that my style is very recognizable. At least the words I insist on change pretty often. For instance, I've finally stopped trying to use the word "ostensibly" in every third sentence.
