Discussion: Some say short stories are difficult to write; others find it very hard to think up longer plots. Is there a particular length of story that you're most comfortable with?

I'm trying to write some short stories because I need practice finishing things, but multi-chapter adventures are where my heart is. Keeping things simple is quite a challenge (although it's fun to try).

Still reading and planning, but I may try to put some words down in an orderly fashion tonight, and see where it takes me.

I've been doing a lot of short pieces lately, to keep my writing hand in, but I really do prefer writing long multi-chapter epics!

I mainly lurk here, because although I'm working on one large story (for a long time), I mostly write short form fic. I'd have to say that 100 word drabbles or double drabbles are my favorite format. I use them for exploring ideas, worldbuilding, and complete moments that don'r really need further exploration.

I want to write longfics! It's definitely what I most enjoy reading, too. Alas, I fail at plot and - in the rare cases where that's not true, or not wholly - I run out of steam. D:<

As things stand, the longest complete thing I've written is the Yuletide fic that clocked in at 3,700 words - not even half the minimum length I look for when choosing fics to read!

Yesterday (since it is now the following morning) was a thinky day, mostly because I was very tired and could do little else. (Snow is pretty, but trudging through it is obnoxious.)

I used to do nothing but longfics, but I've since learned to focus on shorts instead. Not to be crude, but 'ficcers get a very low return on their time investment, for the most part, when they do longfics, especially in smaller fandoms like the ones I inhabit. It's been my experience that most readers don't have the patience for them.
