[personal profile] mystiri_1 posting in [community profile] writethisfanfic
Following my previous post, I have received several links, and done some experimenting. So here is a rundown on how to install a word meter on your DW journal, so that you can keep track of your progress.

There are three different word meters here. We'll start with languageisavirus.com's word meter, simply because it is the first one I found.

Languageisavirus Nano Word meter.

2233 / 20000 words. 11% done!

1. Under the 'Organise' section of the DW home page is 'Customise Style'. Go here, and click 'Text'.

2. In the box marked 'Text for the 'Custom text' heading' add the heading of your choice - I used 'Words For the Month' as mine.

3. In a separate tab, go to www.languageisavirus.com/nanowrimo/word-meter.html and input your information (current word count and goal) into the boxes. You can even pick a color for your meter. Calculate your progress then copy/paste the resulting html into the Text for the Custom Text box.

4. Place a url in the box below. After the first attempt showed me that clicking on the meter also took you to the meter website, I changed the url so that it actually led to the 'Custom text' page. This way, to update your word count you can click on the meter to get the new html code, then click on the header (Words for the Month) to go straight to the custom text page to paste it in. This means the URL you want to use is at the top of the page - http://www.dreamwidth.org/customize/options?group=text

5. The first time you do this, you'll want to make sure the custom text module is somewhere visible. After saving changes to your custom text box, click Modules from the tab at the side. Enabled modules are numbered. I ranked mine 'Profile' 1, 'Calendar' 2 and 'Custom text' 3, which placed it directly below my calendar. Relevant and easy to find.

Pros:
  • It shows your progress as a percentage. Percentages are shiny!
  • You can pick your colour, and even resize the meter to match your sidebar if you want.
Cons:
  • Easiest way to update is still going to the langauageisavirus site, which is cumbersome.

So onto our next meter. You'll notice some of the steps are the same.

Writertopia's Picometer

1. Under the 'Organise' section of the DW home page is 'Customise Style'. Go here, and click 'Text'.

2. In the box marked 'Text for the 'Custom text' heading' add the heading of your choice.

3. In the Text for the 'Custom Text' box, paste the following code:

<img src="http://picometer.writertopia.com/words=2233&target=20000">

This one is fairly self-explanatory. http://picometer.writetopia.com is the source of the meter. By modifying this address, you add your word count (words=2233) and your goal (target=20000). This means you can update your word meter just by changing these numbers.

4. As above. Add this URL - http://www.dreamwidth.org/customize/options?group=text - to the URL box so that you can edit your word meter by clicking on the heading to go straight to the Custom Text box. (You must click the heading to do this, as clicking on the meter will take you to the meter's web page.)

5. Make sure the custom text module is somewhere visible. After saving changes to your custom text box, click Modules from the tab at the side. Enabled modules are numbered. Give it a ranking that makes it easily visible on your sidebar.

Pros:
  • easy to update word count and goal, with self-explanatory code
  • simple and no frills
  • still has shiny percentages!
Cons:
  • simple and no frills - fairly unexciting colours that cannot be changed.
  • comparatively small text

The final word meter is associated with a site you might be familiar with: Write or Die. If you're not familiar with it, Write or Die is an app where you can set a timed goal, and a target word count, then you start writing. It has consequences for failing to meet your target - the site boasts that it puts the 'prod' in productivity, and even has an 'electroshock mode'. (I think this last is an exaggeration, but I'm not willing to try it to find out.) But it's probably quite appropriate that they have a way to track your overall writing progress.

Write or Die Word Meter

1. Under the 'Organise' section of the DW home page is 'Customise Style'. Go here, and click 'Text'.

2. In the box marked 'Text for the 'Custom text' heading' add the heading of your choice.

3. In the Text for the 'Custom Text' box, paste the following code:

<a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/writeordie.drwicked.com/');" href="http://writeordie.drwicked.com/"><img src="http://drwicked.com/progress.php?words=2233&goal=20000" /></a>

Again it is fairly simple to see where the meter can be modified for your own use. Add your word count and goal by changing the numbers in the final web address.

Pros:
  • clicking the meter takes you to the Write or Die website, where you can add to your word count.
  • easy to update
  • basic black goes with everything.
Cons
  • no percentages
  • bigger than other meters
  • more code

Thanks for this! I'd completely forgotten about the Writertopia picometer (which I was familiar with, and liked, from another comm, but I'd never before worked on a long enough story to bother using it); I'm having the most fantastic time with it! :D

I got linked here, and this is genius. Thank you! It saves me from needing to write a DW suggestion to add this to journals somehow.

Once I got picometer working how I liked, I looked for a word meter that was prettier but as easily updated. I found the Critique Circle Word Meter. It's very compact and pretty, and lets you customize fonts, colors, size, etc.

I also decided that I didn't want a heading, so left the "Custom Text Header" and url blank and just used this:

<center><a href = "http://www.dreamwidth.org/customize/options?group=text"><img src="http://www.critiquecircle.com/wordmeter.asp?curr=3857&goal=120000&"></a></center>

(Well, I added some more customization, but leaving that out is easier to read.)
