I apologise for the unofficial hiatus that the community has been on for the last few months. I've had a few health issues in RL that have had to take priority over everything else and I sort of dropped the ball with keeping up with the running of this community, along with other things.

I plan to resume all activities from January onwards with sporadic check ins throughout December for anyone who needs those, I'm aware that some challenges have reveals next month. I'll put up the sign up and hosting posts sometime over the weekend for starting in January.

I've set up a collection over on Squidge here it should be coming up as wip_challenge on the dropdown menu when adding your fics to it, it is set to be unmoderated and for registered user only so anything that is added to it should show up straight away.

At the moment I'm tidying up the sign up form a wee bit and also adding the Squidge link to it so that it can be found easily from there and I'll add it to the sidebar links as well.

Thanks to [personal profile] linaewen for posting check ins recently :)

[admin post] Admin Post: AO3 collection

I'm not sure how many of you are using our AO3 collection, if at all, it was set up by a previous mod so I can't actually do anything with it. I'm vaguely aware of a lot of the issues with both AO3 and OTW from seeing content around my f-list and network recently and I'm also aware a lot of people are also considering their options for where they post their fic and other fannish content now. I do have an account on Squidge World and it looks straightforward enough to set up a collection on there.

Would having a collection on Squidge World be useful at all for anyone?

Any input in general is fine.

1. I apologise for not being around as mod as often as I would have liked, I had a lot of things to deal with in my private life that obviously had to take priority. I'm aiming to be around more next year (*fingers crossed*)

2. I've got both of the monthly posts made up for the whole of 2022 and these will revert back to going up at the beginning of each *month, January's is up already due to my work schedule from the 1st. Although I know that this is forward planning on my part, I do know that I will be unavailable for two weeks in April and also for the whole of November with having travel booked, we'll get to those dates nearer to those months.
*I have change stickies for the first of the month on my calendar and in my diary so that I remember.

3. Finally, I hope that everyone of you has a brilliant 2022 :)

Rare mod post :)

I noticed on the profile page earlier that the comm first opened for business, so to speak, in July 2010 and I'm thinking that maybe we could do something(s) to mark the occasion.

What things could we do to mark ten years of [community profile] writethisfanfic?

*I'm not changing the format of the comm or anything, just looking for suggestions for little anniversary challenges and stuff.

Hi all, pull a chair and grab a drink :)

I have to say that it's nice to see a little more activity around here with it going quiet of late. We're very low key and low to no pressure around here in that there aren't really any rules other than be nice and use the community in whatever way works the best for you and you're writing needs, although we're aimed towards fan fic writers, original fic writers are more than welcome to join us and also join in with the discussions as most of our topics are general rather than specific to fandom activities.

A couple of things to get out of the way, during the first day week of the month I change the two sticky posts because those are for the sign up which is optional though some folks find it useful to have something to work towards and I tend to a link to the current months post as well and the hosting volunteers which is for anyone who would like to help out with the check in posts, I tend to a link to the current months post as there is usually spaces available. If you would like to help out with the check ins that would be great and I'm around for general brainstorming and a reminder a day or two before. The check in posts are usually tagged with daily:check in, the tagging is optional.

Promotion. If you have a writing community or a writing challenge to promote drop me a PM first just so that I know to expect to see an advert.

Affilate. If you have a writing community or a challenge and would like to be affiliated with us drop me a PM first just so that I know and can organise to edit the community profile page.

AO3. We have a collection there wip_challenge and it is unmoderated (I think; it's been a while since I've used it myself) and anyone can add their work to it at anytime. On the post page just type in the community name and it should come up.

Resources. We have a request for resources post that I'll be working on compiling in the next couple of weeks because RL has got in my way of late.

I think that's everything and if you need to get hold of me for anything, PM works best.

Quick mod note.

If you can help out at all, even for a couple of days, let me know :)

I've spent a little time yesterday and today updating the community info. If I've missed something off on the new version, or if something looks wonky wording wise - I'm dyslexic so it might, let me know and I'll edit it. Again, this has been a task that I've been putting off for ages.

The new version, posted today.
New profile info:
[community profile] writethisfanfic is a community for helping you with working on your fan fiction. We aim to provide support and resources for everyone. Introduce yourself, comment on any of the daily check in posts, volunteer.

During the first week of the month we have a challenge sign up post for those who need to work towards something, this is optional but some members find this useful. We also have a volunteers sign up post for helping out with hosting the daily check in post, these generally run Sunday to Saturday with Saturday been the day for sharing snippets and seeking help.
These recurring monthly posts are always the community sticky posts, links are provided to the previous months posts when these are updated.

Promoting other writing communities and challenges – this is absolutely fine, please let me know first.

We have a webchat channel www.slashnet.org/webclient/writethisfanfic but I don’t know how active this is or even if it’s still been used by members.

Any problems or suggestions for improvement, please contact your mods: lilly_c (Cat) via PM.

For context this is what was in the community bio before.
Old profile info:
A community to help you write fanfiction. Our goal is to provide support & resources for any fic writers, but particularly those wanting to write their first (or almost first) fanfiction.
Introduce yourself, grab a seat, post short passages you're not sure about, talk to us about your dream of joining this particular challenge you're not too sure about, share your tips, ask for a beta, offer your services as one - the possibilities are endless!

Our rules are simple:

1. Don't be a jerk. You know what that means.
2. Constructive criticism is welcome. Personal attacks are not.
3. We take fanfiction seriously - if you think it's a good way to practice for original fiction, it's your right, but don't belittle the opinions & fears of those posting here.

Any problems or suggestions for improvement, please contact your mods: [personal profile] lilly_c (Cat).

If you want to chat, we have the channel www.slashnet.org/webclient/writethisfanfic

Can any of help out with the daily check in posts on the weeks of 13th to 19th and 20th to 26th?

At the moment I can only do one week of check ins myself, so any extra help with the day to day running of the comm, in any way at all is greatly appreciated. If you can't do a full week, than any days that you can manage is absolutley fine.

Thanks :)

[admin post] Admin Post: Feedback and suggestions

Hi folks, a very rare mod post.

I’m not sure if this has been done before or not, so I thought that it would be good for us to have a feedback and suggestions post.

This is where you all tell me what is working, what isn’t working and anything else in-between, and although I aren’t screening comments, you can also PM me about anything related to the community at any time.

Mod contact info — I will get around to changing the mod contact info on the profile page because I’m not certain if the people named as contacts for the community are actively using Dreamwidth anymore.

Tags — I’m going to leave the tags alone for the time being but I would like to tidy them up a bit because there are several that haven’t been used for a long time and I still need to figure out what to do with those.

Over to you.

Hi everyone -- due to a combination of personal things, I find myself having less & less time to devote to this community. Which is sad! I've gotten so much writing done through this group, & met so many fabulous people -- I think we could keep doing great stuff, & even more great stuff, but I'm not at the point where I can keep shepherding it along myself.

Is anyone interested in co-modding the comm with me? Having one or two more people would be really useful -- I think the main thing right now is coordinating the WIP challenge (finding people to do check-in posts, & reminding them when their week is up, posting sign-ups, etc.), but also if people wanted to run regular writing sessions or... do any other sort of group activity, that would be fabulous.

If you're interested, I'd be happy to talk it through if you have questions -- you can comment here or PM me.

Thanks for being here, everyone -- every time someone says that they've found something here useful, it makes me really happy! I hope we can keep on making this a useful, encouraging space for us fic writers.

The tiny thing in this post first: I've been messing around w/the tags, in an effort to make them nested & neat, & much easier to browse if you want WIP challenge stuff that isn't a check-in post, or info on writing sessions in your time zone, etc. I think there's a bug that still needs tweaking, but we'll see what Support says. BTW, if any of you have been interested in nested tags but couldn't find the info on how to use them, my support request has some useful explanations!

On to betas! There's been consistent interest in finding betas through the comm. How can we make this happen for you? I thought maybe a list of people volunteering to beta might be helpful, but I know that such lists go out of date almost immediately. There's even [community profile] beta_masterlist, but that doesn't seem to be active either.

Looking at the other side of the equation, if you need a beta, feel free to post & ask! If we get to the point where we have a dozen beta-seeking posts a day, we'll have to rethink that, but for now it's absolutely fine.

But I'm still really stuck on wanting a way to keep a list of volunteer betas. Is there anyone else who would find this useful? I ask partly because of this comm's original focus on fic-writing newbies, & my experience as a newbie myself (which wasn't so long ago...). I was terrified of posting fic, & especially putting my username to it--this is why my AO3 name is different!--& certainly at first, I was too afraid to ask anyone I knew for a beta. None of my friends were in the fandom, & well, yes, I could've posted to the fandom's LJ comm. But it has over a thousand members. Way too intimidating for me at the time. Eventually I got my nerve up to ask a friend of mine to beta for me, & things got better from there.

But still, I agonized so much over daring to ask for a beta! I can't be the only person who went through that. Of course, even if we had a volunteer beta list, people would still have to approach a beta directly, but I think it would've felt less intimidating to me.

Also, I like betaing, & (time/energy permitting, fandoms matching if need be) would be happy to do more of it. It'd be nice to find a way to note that to people in this comm.

Any ideas on how to do this & keep it relevant & up-to-date without being too burdensome? Maybe it's impossible, but thoughts welcome!

Welcome!
