& how do you feel about that?

Date: Tuesday, December 20th, 2011 22:19 (UTC)I don't know if there's something specific I wish I knew when I started writing fic; I think I just wish I felt more confident earlier on, but then I suppose everyone feels that way!

Date: Tuesday, December 20th, 2011 23:16 (UTC)Get rid of mum and Brian in the morning :p and apart from a quick trip to bank on my way home, all I'm doing is watching TV and working on fics and I cannot wait! been everywhere while they've been up here so it'll be nice having some time to myself before I travel to them late next week for new years.
Wish I knew that going with what works for you is better than doing what everyone else in fandom is doing. Had I known that way back in the day and also in some of the fandoms I've been in over the years, I wouldn't have bothered writing the "main" pairings like everyone else did/does but with that it's mostly trail and error anyway. These days I write any pairings regardless of what is/isn't acceptable because that works for me. trying and failing miserably to not sound defiant super tired tonight

Date: Wednesday, December 21st, 2011 05:24 (UTC)As for the discussion topic, I wish I had known to never post anything before finishing it :P I also wish I'd started writing at a younger age. I spent so many years hating the forced creative writing assignments in school that I never considered doing it for fun.

Date: Wednesday, December 21st, 2011 07:50 (UTC)For the discussion topic, I guess knew how to write at a younger age too. I can't believe the creative writing stuff I wrote for fun when in high school were filled with cliches, grammar mistakes, POV shifts, and just plain lazy writing. D:

Date: Wednesday, December 21st, 2011 17:43 (UTC)What I wish I'd known...html basics? livejournal functions, fanfic etiquette? Not getting freaked out by wank?
All these things come with experience. I couldn't have known them straight off, they were part of the learning process.

Date: Wednesday, December 21st, 2011 20:39 (UTC)& nothing wrong w/being defiant. :) (& I hear you, I usually end up shipping rare pairs & just have to get used to not getting the instant adoration of writing the popular pairings, heh.)

Date: Wednesday, December 21st, 2011 20:42 (UTC)I've heard so many people say that school squelched the love of writing out of them for years. It's such a shame!!

Date: Wednesday, December 21st, 2011 20:43 (UTC)Eh, I think we all get better at the technical craft of writing as we do it more & as time goes on, so don't be too hard on your younger self. :)

Date: Wednesday, December 21st, 2011 20:46 (UTC)& I agree w/you -- there's a lot I don't think I could've known at first either.
(Also heh re: the prompt that is tempting you -- I don't know if I could write a sad story about my OTP! Though it might be an interesting exercise.)
