For discussion: What do you know now that you wish you knew when you started writing fic?

Got my rough draft mostly finished for yuletide and my beta has just gotten back to me with thoughts so I'm at a less panicky stage. Still it needs more work, especially because it is so rough and I need to have a serious think about it tomorrow.

Some more phone scribbles for me today. Road trips to different parts of the country this week have helped with the scribbles. Found my data cable and have got them waiting on my desktop for me to look over and see what is and isn't usuable. Have got some things from todays "adventure" because getting back home from Montrose was a lot of fun so I might have to use some of it for a ficlet.

Get rid of mum and Brian in the morning :p and apart from a quick trip to bank on my way home, all I'm doing is watching TV and working on fics and I cannot wait! been everywhere while they've been up here so it'll be nice having some time to myself before I travel to them late next week for new years.

Wish I knew that going with what works for you is better than doing what everyone else in fandom is doing. Had I known that way back in the day and also in some of the fandoms I've been in over the years, I wouldn't have bothered writing the "main" pairings like everyone else did/does but with that it's mostly trail and error anyway. These days I write any pairings regardless of what is/isn't acceptable because that works for me. trying and failing miserably to not sound defiant super tired tonight

I just wish i started writing earlier at a younger age.I told my stories verbally instead of writing them down. I wish I wrote them down along with telling them. :)

Made some progress with several fics. Nothing major, though I tried.

Discussion topic...I can't say there's really anything I wish I knew. I just wish I were better at plotting.

I've made a little bit of progress today. Not as much as I'd like, but better than I expected.

As for the discussion topic, I wish I had known to never post anything before finishing it :P I also wish I'd started writing at a younger age. I spent so many years hating the forced creative writing assignments in school that I never considered doing it for fun.

Had been thinking of writing a few new scenes I thought of for my Big Bang story, so I ended up writing one, which was 450 words. I also had been thinking over the timeline of my Big Bang, so I was tweeking that a bit and made slight edits to the story. Nothing too serious. Tomorrow I might get another scene written.

For the discussion topic, I guess knew how to write at a younger age too. I can't believe the creative writing stuff I wrote for fun when in high school were filled with cliches, grammar mistakes, POV shifts, and just plain lazy writing. D:

I wish I had gotten over my OC-related hangups sooner, both pro- and anti-. And I wish I'd had better perspective on the Mary Sue phenomenon.

Its going well. I'm still being sorely tempted by a prompt that I don't think I can do justice to (Prompter wants my OTP as a secondary pairing who later break up). Also exploring the idea of doing writing exercises on 750words. I have a few writing books that give exercises at the end of each chapter. Thye often seem a bit silly and I don't feel like doing them. But, if I push myself (e.g., by using 750w) I can usually get something from them, even if its not fic.

What I wish I'd known...html basics? livejournal functions, fanfic etiquette? Not getting freaked out by wank?

All these things come with experience. I couldn't have known them straight off, they were part of the learning process.
