Has this ever happened to you? What do you tell friends or relatives who wonder why you're spending so much time writing, anyway? Do any of them know you write fanfiction? If so, do they know specifics (or are you hiding the pr0n, etc.!)? Have you showed them any?

So much better than yesterday! Churning ahead w/two fills for eastasianfandomgiftbag. Am trying to make myself wait to post one of them -- partly because it's generally just good for me to give a fic a night to cool off before I look at it one more time before posting. & partly because posting right before Yuletide opens probably means people won't see the fic, either because they'll be reading YT or because AO3 will go down under the YT strain. ;P

I don't tell any of my family that I write fic! Some of my in-person friends (that aren't in fandom themselves, I mean) know, but only a few. It's not something I'd want them to casually mention to others (one of my friends & I met over LJ, & I was out w/her when she introduced me to 2 other friends who used to be on LJ, one of whom now works at the same place I do. I'm really hoping new coworker didn't hear my username, b/c I don't want anyone at work to have the potential to go look up my fic. >_<).

I do feel weird, though, meeting new people & you go through that thing where you talk about what hobbies you have or what you do outside of work. & there's this big space where I have a huge hobby (not only writing fic but running this comm, etc.) that I can't mention, so I just sound really boring & like I don't do anything!

Was going good with the fic today then I got distracted by some stv charity thing my flatmate was watching when I went to cook earlier. Haven't quite got back into my stride with my fic yet. Always later on today.

Last night I posted my masterpost/chapters list for my huge SVU fic on my comm. I've only put it up to kick my own arse back into gear with it. I also did some research for the re-sparked fic, mostly driving distances and the trains. Some of it will be usable but google maps are bit rubbish especially when mesauring distance in miles.

Normally I'm in my bedroom so I don't really have people watching what I'm doing on the computer but I do get very nervous when I'm at my mum's house and she's around, even when I'm only looking at hmv or amazon. She makes me nervous anyway but more so when I'm on the computer.
I'm not that bothered when it's my auntie because she ends up giving me advice for whatever I'm working on wether it's fic, uni work or something else.

From a distance it must just look like I'm 'working as usual', i.e., typing at the computer or writing. I'm pretty sensitive about people looking at the screen and actually reading it though, so I make sure that I can easily hide everything in a few seconds (which is not that great for concentration). The handwritten stuff is pretty safe as my handwriting is appealing and you'd have to be 'actively nosy' rather than 'just casually interested' to want to try to read it.

I don't think any of them know I write fanfiction, I'm not sure they know it exists. I don't think that this will last.

I hope you were able to get some more fic time in later! & yay for posting your chapter list!

I find it difficult to have to use a computer where family can see me, if I've been used to not having anyone see (anyone who would care, I mean; my partner doesn't!). Your auntie sounds awesome, though. :D

Yeah, I have a reflex now of switching from application to application quickly in case someone comes by! (on a Mac it's cmd-tab, & I can't think of what it is on a PC, which is ridiculous b/c I picked up this keyboard shortcut at work years ago, heh.)

I hope if/when your family does find out about fic they're cool w/it!
