[personal profile] linaewen posting in [community profile] writethisfanfic
Yikes, I totally missed Tuesday, I'm so sorry!  I even forgot to post to my own check in post on Monday to join the discussion -- I think that means I am not managing my time very well this week.  ;-)  In any case, it's Wednesday today, and that means the week is half over!  How has it been going for you either yesterday or today with your writer-ly pursuits?
  • I wrote
  • I did some planning and/or research
  • I edited
  • I've sent my fic off to my beta
  • I posted today!
  • I'm taking a break
  • I did something else that I'll talk about in a comment
Discussion:  On Monday we discussed getting back on track when our routines are disrupted.  Please add to that by sharing about how you feel about your routine THIS week.  Are you on track for the rest of the week?  If there is one thing that would really help you achieve your writing goals for the week, what would it be?  What is one thing that might hinder you?

Wrote, edited AND posted both yesterday and today -- I managed 2700 words yesterday and 1400 words today, which finished Chapter Five and Chapter Six of "Solstice and Equinox" plus some material for future chapters. I'm hoping folks are liking the story thus far: it's turning into a rather convoluted exploration of interpersonal relationships on Deep Space Nine in general, not simply the Garak/Bashir dynamic.

I'm on track for this week, and even a little ahead of expectations. If one of my editors drops a sudden packet of work in my lap that might derail me (paying gigs before pleasure, after all), but otherwise if I can keep up this pace I'll have a goodly word count under my belt come Sunday.

Hope everyone else's week is going spectacularly! :)

Nothing fic-wise for me Tuesday other than posting one. And then I left my thumb drive at work last night, so I couldn't work on anything. :(

Today I have been judging a contest entry, but as I have succumbed to the sickness being passed around my house, I may rest and read tonight rather than do much writing.

Discussion topic...this week, my routine is still out of whack due to me. I just haven't made the effort to enforce it. (And now I'm sick and need to sleep more.)

The one thing that might help is not having to work and being home enjoying the peace and quiet. Of course, that might also be the hindrance--being home would be also be nap-inducing. :)

I've written just around 2000 words. On an iPad. My wrists hurt! ;-)

I write late at night, in bed, and for as long as I can stay awake. It works for me, at the moment, although I would really like to get back to writing on my laptop during the day in stead. Less strain on the wrists that way. :-)

I'm waiting for my fic to return from beta. I keep being incredibly nitpicky at everything. I guess I'm having one of those days where everything I write seems like it detracts from the narrative. But without it, I don't have any narrative.

So... I'm trying to focus on stories where I've only written up the general outline of the plot.

I have to say: I love the way you write. If only I were in the same fandoms as you.

Aw, thank you! :) That's terribly kind of you. What fandoms do you usually frequent? I'm writing in DS9 at the moment but I've been in a few other (as have many of us here, I'm sure). :)

I hate "one step forward, two steps back" writing days. But it's true that you can't edit if you don't have words on the page/screen, so pretty much anything you get down will be grist for the mill.

I a non-shippy sense I frequent a lot of fandoms. I think I'm the only Star Trek fan who doesn't look at the show(s) with slash-tinted goggles.

:D! YES. She even makes me interested in historical fiction. Which is a feat considering the only ship I had were Prince Max of Baden and Lord Byron.

Yes, yes and yes. I have those days where I have to tell myself to write -- however bad it may feel. And not to delete huge chunks of texts.

I got a couple of prompts unexpectedly over at [community profile] ot3_promptfest, so I tried to noodle around w/one of them today. Didn't get anywhere, but maybe later. Right now I'm trying to do some editing on another fic. This week I feel really... distracted. There are a lot of WIPs I want to work on, but I'm having trouble focusing on any one of them in a way that lets me make progress. I'll open one, read it, adjust a sentence or two, conclude that there's still a lot of work to do, click around the internet a little, then close that file & open another WIP. Repeat same process. :/

That said, I've written a lot of new words this week, which is potentially useful!

... I might see if anyone wants to do a writing session this weekend, cuz I find it easier to edit while I'm in one lately for some reason! Also perhaps I ought to print out some of my WIPs at work for hard-copy editing; that helps me too.

What might hinder me is being low on sleep & thus even more distractible. ^^;;; I did take a nap earlier this evening, which helped a little (still a bit groggy though!).

Yesterday decided to edit the sixth chapter of my Big Bang. Considering I still haven't gotten in touch with my current beta and my new beta haven't emailed me back her thoughts on the earlier chapters for her to catch up on the story, I'm trying my best to look for grammar mistakes and characterization problems/anything unrealistic for now. Later today I'll be continuing with the editing process.

Usually how I get back in the writing routine is I just do whatever I can to make some progress, from wrapping up one scene that needed just a few more sentences to writing whatever's in my mind at the moment for a particular chapter I want to work on. For this week I want to get editing done on both my Big Bang and help_japan fics. I had a slow start with that but I'm getting there.

No, not the only one. I have never shipped male/male pairs for any show, movie, or book I've read.

Folks seem to be enjoying it quite a bit so far. :)

It's a courtship story at this point, one which seeks to deal realistically with the numerous thorny problems Julian Bashir would have encountered if he'd decided to pursue Elim Garak after the events of "The Wire". He has to face not only the political issues raised by a senior Starfleet officer considering issuing a marriage proposal to a known operative of an enemy government, but also the matter of just how the hell he's supposed to go about it, because in Cardassian culture you don't just go up to someone you want to have a long-term serious emotional/sexual relationship with and say "Hey, you're pretty groovy, let's move in together and fuck like rabbits." Plus he has to keep Garak in the dark while he's figuring things out, because... well, it's explained in the story. ;)

So do I! And I hate that the dictionary is so sucky it was the first thing I had to figure out how to turn off because it actually lowered my speed. And I hate that I can't install a different keyboard as standard.

... I bet noone can tell that I have an Android phone and that my iPad is part of an experiment at university, so we've borrowed them for free. ;-)

I did something else (or rather a million other things that needed done).

My routine this week has been shot to hell. I was only just starting to get into a proper one again but between getting the new puppy on Monday (who is utterly adorable) and knitting like a fiend for a present this Monday coming, I've managed very little. I knew it was coming though so I allowed myself the leeway and anything I do get written this week I'm considering a bonus. Generally speaking, tiredness is what hinders me and getting a good nights sleep as well a a relatively quiet day at work works wonders for me getting stuff written.

Nothing doing today (ficwise). I'm to the point where I'm trying to bridge the various pieces of my chapter together which takes time. So I worked and played a little Halo Reach.

Discussion: I'm actually on track, with the way I write. I usually need a day or two to let the idea's percolate when going from the bones of the story to fleshing it out. My biggest help and hindrance is real life. I may find the time while at work when there are less distractions writing or I might be busy. It would help if I could concentrate easier writing at home.

I was unable to get any writing done yesterday, but I did some planning... to START A NEW PROJECT.

*facepalm*

Because why should I work on the millions of WIPs I have, rather than grabbing something totally new?

On top of everything, my routine is totally shot for the next two weeks, because I have a houseguest. She's actually my beta, so she'll probably be understanding if I do some writing... but I don't want to be rude.

That said, I already got to write today... I cranked out a quick drabble for a prompt over at [community profile] fic_promptly!
