Discussion: We know shipping is serious business to a lot of people, but what about non-romantic pairs? Are there characters you really like seeing as best friends, rivals or long-lost siblings? How much do these preferences affect what you choose to read and write?

Date: Monday, March 5th, 2012 20:02 (UTC)The big problem I have right now is that I have to start working on my Time Travel Big Bang, but I've been ambushed by another idea that has me totally enthralled. :P
I'm definitely all about the friendship! As much as I ship Sherlock/John, I'm also very fond of them as just friends too, and have written both. I also love the relationships between the Doctor and his companions (and the companions with each other), which I very very rarely ship.

Date: Monday, March 5th, 2012 21:05 (UTC)As for today's discussion - I enjoy exploring characters and their relationships (romantic or non-romantic). I find the dynamics between characters very interesting, so I'd say this factors quite a bit into what I choose to write (and read). It's great when a good plot comes attached to it, because then there's also how the dynamics change due to the plot, etc. But at the root of it all, I think it's the characters and their relationships that gets me emotionally invested in a story (whether I'm writing it or reading it).

Re: the discussion question... I enjoy seeing Julian Bashir and Miles O'Brien chum around together, and love having an opportunity to include this relationship in stories I write. And that's really all I can come up with on the subject at the moment. :)

Pieces - So much timeline and location confusion! I have some ideas, but... >_<
One of a Hundred - Still confused about characterisation ._.
Not much progress at all, I must admit. I did get some work done on an AMV, though >_>

Date: Monday, March 5th, 2012 23:02 (UTC)Whenever I read fics it's more to scratch the itch of bringing 2 characters in a romantic relationship so I rarely get to read/write for non-romantic pairs. I'm all for h/c though so I guess that is where I get my non-shippy, non-romantic interactions between my favorite characters.

Date: Tuesday, March 6th, 2012 02:46 (UTC)This is the first time in awhile I've been able to concentrate on finishing one thing. Mentally, it is much harder to do than I had anticipated but I am ultimately getting more done in less time than I usually need.

Date: Tuesday, March 6th, 2012 03:28 (UTC)And my answer to today's question is identical to yesterday's: as far as writing the friendship/non-pairing is often determined by the prompt I'm writing to. As for reading, it all really depends on the characters in question. I read a wider variety of pairings/non-pairings than I write, so as long as someone can make a convincing case I'll follow along, even if it's not what I view myself.
