I hope the writing is going well for you all today :)

Everyone is out and I have the house to myself for a couple of hours. I plan to get more editing done, likely one chapter, and possibly work on a short one-shot. If I have a bit of time before we go out tonight I want to work on an outline for another chapter fic that is starting to come together in a way I hadn't expected.

Discussion topic: dealing with negativity. I recently read this article on The Guardian about John Scalzi, who, after continually being trolled by someone on his website decided to donate money to four different charities. I’m pleased he found a positive way to deal with this negativity but I also think that he could have been supporting these causes anyway.

How do you deal with negative comments about your fic? Would you donate money to charity like John Scalzi did? What cause(s) would get your donation?

I did get some negative comments about one of my SG1 fics but I also had a lot of people sticking up for me when that happened, made lots of online friends from that so something good came from it and a couple of years ago I got continually flamed by someone in Taggart fandom (as tiny as it is) because I included a warning for spoilers on an art post, the person who did it on LJ got banned from commenting on my public journal and I also reported them (not that they, LJ, ever actually do anything) and I found out they were following me on twitter at that time so I unfollowed and blocked them on there too. Of course it is that crap that makes me step back and keep fairly quiet in all of my fandoms especially when I post new work.

If I was in a financially stable position and could afford to do it, my money would go to the two causes that mean the most to me, with 60% going to Women’s Aid because the work they do with victims of domestic violence is invaluable and it was their support staff that helped my mum and me when she left her ex-husband. The remaining 40% goes to LifeSigns because the work they do to help people deal with their self harm and eradicate the stigma surrounding it is fantastic and it is run by people who used to self harm, so they know what they’re talking about. I did recently buy a new SIAD (self injury awareness day) wristband and I know that the £3.10 I paid will go directly to supporting them in their work, I buy a new SIAD wristband every year. I would also make a large one-off donation to the RFL Benevolent fund because they work with rugby league players who had their playing careers cut short by serious, and often life changing injuries. I've had a lot of involvement with the sport as I grew up watching it, still do when I can and I used to work for my local rugby club here in West Yorkshire on match days before I moved to Scotland.
