When you write fanfic, do you try to preserve the tone and style of the canon as you write? Why or why not?
For me, it depends. If I'm writing for an exchange, I tend to try to get the tone and style as close as possible to canon unless my recipient indicated that they were okay with something different. If I'm writing on my own, I will sometimes work in a different style or tone if that's what seems to serve the story best. It opens up whole realms of possibilities.
