1. (noun)  One who works at or is responsible for loading and unloading ships in port
2. (verb)  To handle (to load or unload) cargo as a stevedore

Per our friends at Merriam-Webster, "stevedore" came to English from the Spanish "estibador" which came from "estibar" meaning "to pack".  The first known use of "stevedore" in English was in 1788.
