The technique makes me think of Zette's phrase outline idea, used instead with a timeline.
I'm now cheerfully writing summaries/ideas for a few years down the road from my main/primary fanfic, as well as writing the primary :). It is helping with my monkey mind, because I definitely don't write linear.
Planning on using this technique on the mishmash of some big stories that I started and fizzled out on. Will be interesting to try.
