How is today going for you?

Today is going quite well as I typed my new scenes on my kids big bang and a quick word count check tells me that I'm a little under 1600 words on the rough draft of the chapter I’ve been working on, and I'll likely be spending another hour or so with that fic before I stop for the day.

Discussion: word count. Is knowing your word count while you are writing important? Do you wait until you've finished to check it?

I don't like knowing my word count while I’m writing, I find that it puts me off and blocks my flow. I prefer to wait until I’ve finished because the final count is more important to me than the in-progress count.

I have to know my word count as I go along! Getting those micro milestones met (100 words, 500 words, 1000 words, etc), gives me the jolt I need to go forward.

Word count is only important to me if it has a minimum/maximum word count that I'd have to adhear to (like drabble challenges, fic exchanges, contests, etc.,). Otherwise, I probably don't pay a whole lot of attention to my word count.

I only check the word count during writing when I am aiming for a certain number of words as part of a challenge. Otherwise, it doesn't really matter what my word count is.
