Discussion question: Do you write well with distractions? I actually like to be in a chatroom, have music going, or be answering comments while I am writing. Just concentrating on the blank page is hard for me. I kind of need to approach writing sideways and have distractions available.

Today I signed up for Yuletide. That took some doing as I had to decide what to request and what to offer. I don't seem to have brain space for anything else right now (I'm kind of stuck on my current story. I did something that wants to be that way but that I can't figure out how to make work).

I like some degree of distraction. I write well with music or even with some types of TV (not my daughter's favorite Disney sit-coms unfortunately). I like doing writing sprints/word wars with people in chat, but I don't tend to write really well while I'm chatting. Going back and forth gets too confusing.

I did some more work on Lost but I had to stop when I was struggling with spelling certain words (joys of having dyslexia). I also did a little more on the rewrite of Something That I Want.

I've always got music on either iTunes or local radio. I can't work too well with a chat or twitter open. TV, when I have access to one, is a no go because I end up watching rather than working.

Yes and no. Positive distractions help me think; negative ones drain all my ideas and doesn't inspire me at all.

I like working with an internet radio station on, and I like writing to shows that don't require my full attention, like The Voice. They're positive distractions to me.

Recently, I've gotten myself in some wanks, and I will admit, they've been over petty things, as if everything I'm supposed to type on the internet is perfect. I'll admit--I don't take things well if I'm being criticized negatively, and especially for criticisms about the content of my writing. It's not stuff that could help my writing; it's more like people saying they hate it because they hate it and I am wrong because they hate it. I tend to stop thinking about whatever it is I want to do creatively and freeze up. Those are negative distractions to me. I'm working harder to put on a tougher skin to ignore people that criticize me for silly things, but I know it'll take some time.

And I really should get a Sleepy Hollow icon. Someday...

Only 150 words, but that's better than nothing, I guess. I was too distracted by Yuletide; reading through the nominated fandoms and doing my signup.

For writing, I prefer silence or a bit of instrumental music.

I'm having a hard time getting back into writing after being forced out of the routine for a long time. At the moment it's mostly my own fault for not taking advantage of free time, rather than the usual too-busy-to-even-think-about-it reasons for not writing! That said, I did do some research for a new prompt, and the ideas I'm getting as a result are appealing.

I am easily distracted in the beginning, but once I settle down and focus, I'm better. It helps to have music playing, but only instrumental; music with words/people singing totally throws me off.
