For most of us, fic is our happy place (even if writing is sometimes like pulling teeth). That doesn't mean that difficult or controversial topics don't come up sometimes. Some writers even seek such topics out. Do you? That is, do you like to write stories with a strong message or do you find that that takes away some (or all) of the pleasure of writing?

I never set out to write issue fic or to grapple with anything particularly difficult. It sometimes happens because something difficult is implicit in my premise or grows out of the character interactions. I seem to have some fascination for characters who compromise in order to survive and what that means for them and what things they're not willing to compromise.
