Discussion: challenges. When you see challenges advertised that you'd like to participate in but aren't sure if you can meet the deadlines and other requirements, do sign up straight away? Do you wait a while before signing up? Write something and see if it fits? Something else that I haven't thought of.

I try to be cautious when it comes to challenges because I often fail to meet the deadlines, I've defaulted on challenges more often than I've completed them. When I do see one that I like but aren't sure, I'll write a few pages of outline to see if the idea works before deciding whether or not to leave a comment on the sign ups. Sometimes I'll use prompts and other things from challenges and work on them at my own pace rather than committing to it.

I used to sign up for everything I could, but I realized that, especially if I spend time agonizing over every prompt, I couldn't do every challenge I possibly could. So I sign up for the challenges I really want to do instead of signing up for everything.

I did a little writing and some research today.

I've never signed up for challenges, mostly because I prefer to do things at my own pace without a deadline. Forcing myself or being in a rush doesn't usually result in quality work for me. :\ I like to follow prompt communities to help give me ideas on what to write.

I usually go ahead and sign up right away for a challenge, because I either get an idea just by seeing the prompt or know that I'll be able to come up with something pretty easily. If I don't feel it's something I can do seeing the prompt, I don't sign up. Most of the challenges I sign up for come from a community that allows posting things late, so that's a blessing when I just can't get it done in time. But I usually meet the deadline!

My main issue with challenges is that I tend to do them instead of concentrate on my WIPs, so the longer tales get neglected more than they should.
