Do you have a fandom you return to over and over again? If so, what about it appeals to you?
I've got two fandoms that I keep going back to: Weiss Kreuz and The Chronicles of Narnia. They're very, very different, and I write a different type of story for each.
Weiss Kreuz appeals to me because there's a decent sized cast (but not too many to keep track of) and because canon has contradictions and holes that make space for stories. I came to the fandom through the fic and before some of the later canon came along, so I tend to play fast and loose with canonical events. I haven't found another canon that sparks my imagination the way this one does. I don't know why.
I came to writing the Chronicles of Narnia through a fandom specific exchange. I like that the canon is ultimately hopeful (even as I'm uncomfortable with some of Lewis' heavier handed religious messages). The Chronicles cover a vast sweep of history, so there's lots of space for inventing stories and characters.

Date: Thursday, August 28th, 2014 14:20 (UTC)I dabble in other fandoms with story ideas, but I always return to Tolkien. There is a never-ending supply of story ideas and characters and gap fillers to write about in the Middle-earth universe, even if one just includes the book canon. Movie canon supplies even more fodder for inspiration. I usually center my attention around Lord of the Rings, but I've also written stories from The Hobbit and The Silmarillion. I've been a fan of this canon for more than 45 years, and I'm still not tired of it!
