How do you like to develop characters? Do you put a lot of time into figuring out details about them that won't appear in the story or do you wait until you need to know something before you decide it?

I tend to take the middle road. There are things I know about characters in a general way. I may not have consciously decided that those things are true, but those things are fundamental enough to the character that I can't imagine them not being true. There other details that I don't decide until they become relevant. If I'm doing it right, however, those details feel inevitable. That is, by the time I make the decision, it doesn't feel like a decision.

I'm travelling home today but I have made a few notes for chapter 8 of Let Me Fade even though I haven't had time to post the previous chapters. I'm planning to have those up in the next couple of weeks.

I tend to develop my characters by using canon references as a starting point and filling in any blanks, especially the things I'd like to explore more of.

I'm trying to figure out what I can do towards making some writing progress, since I don't have my notes and stuff with me. Maybe some canon review...

The main thing I work out specifically ahead of time for my characters is their name (if they are OC's and don't already have a canon name). Somehow that includes deciding what kind of person they are as well, so I do get some details down at that time. Otherwise, I tend to come up with details as they are needed, though I always seem to have a sense of what is fitting for them and what isn't from the beginning.
