Discussion: word count. How important is it to know your word count?

Most of the challenges I do have a required minimum word count, and, because I'm a bit OCD about it, I always try to have it end in a 5 or a 0. ... No particular reason.

I keep an eye on my wordcount, only because it's motivating to me to stay ahead of my goal for the year. I don't stress if I don't make a day or two, and some days it's not about the word count, it's just about the story, but it never hurts to have a few ways to motivate yourself.
