Discussion: when life gets hectic can you write? do you wait until things calm down?

It all depends on why RL is hectic for me. Sometimes I can write and sometimes I can't. I'm slowly coming back to writing after RL decided to kick my arse for a few weeks.

Today I dealt with life, but yesterday I wrote! I had outlined a story 2 weeks ago and final got around to writing it yesterday: http://archiveofourown.org/works/11792166

Interestingly (to me, at any rate), this is the first story I've ever written set in the present day, with no fantastical or science fictional elements.

ETA: I don't normally outline my stories, but one morning 2 weeks ago I had the urge to write a story but not enough time to finish it, so I outlined it so I'd have the whole thing down and wouldn't forget it. It made the final writing so much easier, I may start outlining my stories regularly.

I usually cannot write if life is hectic, due to not being able to concentrate on anything but the hectic-ness. I wait until things calm down, but often then it's hard to get back on track!
