Date: Tuesday, September 6th, 2011 19:47 (UTC)For me it was fan fiction. Then I got into writing romance, joined one of the world's largest writing organizations and have been learning my craft ever since. I have a handful of book-length almost finished novels, but have found that I really really love just writing (romantic) fan fiction. I love to write, but the drive to be 'officially' published just isn't there. Being published in fan fic venues is enough for me. :)

Date: Tuesday, September 6th, 2011 20:08 (UTC)The only fiction Ive ever written is fanfic, bar a few exercises for courses and what I did at school. I think of them as different categories and fanfic as more a fruit of my fannishness than my will to write.

Date: Tuesday, September 6th, 2011 20:13 (UTC)In reality, if I'm not pursuing romance writing for publication, I shouldn't even be in the group, but if people like me (hobby writers) aren't there, then they wouldn't have as many people to run the chapters.

That's less great but I suppose its intended to narrow the variability of genres andbring people together who speak the same fictional language, follow the same rules and have the same goals.

Date: Tuesday, September 6th, 2011 22:01 (UTC)Although I've a soft spot for Original Characters in fanfic, I've never written original fic at all, or recently at least. I did about 25 years ago but it never really went anywhere as full time employment happened and interrupted.

Date: Wednesday, September 7th, 2011 00:24 (UTC)Fanfic came first for me. I've done a few pieces of O-fic over the years, but I far prefer doing fanfic. I didn't feel anywhere near the joy and anticipation working on original stuff that I do working on fic. Plus, with fic I've got a ready-made audience base.

Date: Wednesday, September 7th, 2011 00:41 (UTC)I was the type of kid that had been drawing my own characters and making up stories for them for about as long as I could hold a pencil, but I only really got into fanfiction when I was in middle school. Unfortunately, I haven't written nearly as much original fiction (or finished any big original projects) as I'd like. Hopefully that'll change some time in the future.

Date: Wednesday, September 7th, 2011 04:44 (UTC)I remember writing an original story (a mystery, I think it was) when I was fairly young. I wish I still had it, I'd like to see what it was like! I remember feeling the ending was lame because I got to the end and couldn't figure out how to end it properly. My mom saved it for some time, but I haven't found it to this day.
Aside from that, I'd say fan fiction really came first. I like working with established characters and worlds and timelines, which somehow allows me a lot more flexibility in the creation of new ideas and original characters to fit into those worlds than I think I would have if I tried my hand at O-fic.

Date: Wednesday, September 7th, 2011 09:28 (UTC)Original fiction came first for me. There was this seemingly endless fic - okay, it only came out at 20k in the end, but it did take three years and three completely different versions to get there. Writing it was a lot of fun and probably a good exercise, too, but I can't say I feel like going back to it. Fanfic's just fine for me now.
