[personal profile] linaewen posting in [community profile] writethisfanfic

It's Monday!  Monday's are notorious for being difficult, but I hope your day today has not prevented you from having some constructive fic time.

What are you and your fic up to today?

  • we're writing
  • we're planning or doing research
  • we're editing
  • our beta has the fic
  • we posted today!
  • we are taking a break
  • we're up to something else, check in the comments for details
I think we've discussed this before, but my current situation brings it to mind again -- which is that I am stuck at a computer in a room where a supremely boring television program is being watched at top volume.  What things distract you the most when you are trying to write and make it impossible to concentrate?

It's a challenge week at [community profile] fic_promptly (& also I'm the guest host for this week, which means the comm is more in my consciousness than usual!), so I tried to fill one of the author's choice lonely prompts. Didn't quite get to anything even close to being done, or even having its own internal logic, but there might be something, eventually. (The trouble w/any sort of short-term contest week is that I write slower than that!)

If someone is sitting behind me w/a clear view of the monitor I find it really hard to concentrate!

Today was a very long of lectures. Some I could happily do without.

Kinda outlined. Have something very vague on BB (there were public transport issues today) anyway the outline will likely be used for either a scene or a chapter in my huge l&o:svu wip even though I've not touched it for a while.

I have the next 2 days off and apart from finishing the seminar prep work the plan is to work on something (anything) fic wise :)

I actually get distracted very easily so I usually have my earbuds in to block out any/all background noise or I'll go down to the beach and just write while watching the sea (of course it depends on the weather)

Today's a bank holiday, so for once, I had a quite relaxing monday. :) Got quite an amount of editing done; I'm now in the last chapter and getting into the happy ending scenes, so I hope those will be easier to edit than the dreaded middle part. Though this week is going to be quite busy again...

Distracting things--I'm easily distracted by small noises from people in the same room. Like nervously tapping their feet or loudly chewing gum. Luckily, earplugs and music help against that. But that situation doesn't really occur when I write fic since I live alone.

This sounds so, so very lovely.

Some writing done today, and some research.

I find lots of things distracting. And I always seem to need a chunk of time. I admire people who can scribble for five minutes and then do something else.

Got a teeny bit of (re)writing done today, and hopefully I'll get some more reading done of the novel version of the canon before bed.

My number one distraction is noise; other people talking in particular. Luckily I have my noise-cancelling headphones (which recently broke and are currently being held together with tape DDD:). Also not sure if this counts as a distraction, but I often deal with foreign languages, which totally kills my motivation to work in English prose. Hearing random Spanish in a commercial or something really messes with my ability to work on writing.

No fic-writing today either because I'm still exhausted from yesterday. But I have decided on the pov character for the post-apoca fic and have been thinking about the kink bingo fill that I can't get a handle on. It makes me a bit sad to think about scraping what I've got so far, but it might work better if I do change the pov. As of now, it keeps meandering into completely irrelevant aspects because of this and that's just not cool.

The most distracting is probably still the internet, but sprints or some other sort of timely pressure work fine to get me writing.

Video images/moving light (through fan blades, e.g.). I work best with sound (headphones by preference), but having something playing in the background can drive me crazy if I'm not already deep in the zone.

I was suppose to beta some fics I owe long ago, but instead I beta'd two fics my other friends had send me last minute, LOL. I really want to fix some stuff over my Big Bang, I might squeeze in both beta and writing time for the next few days, I think.

I can be able to write if I have a window of a chatroom open, but if there's suddenly burst of activity or one of my friends is stressed and wanted to talk to me then I get really distracted, LOL.

I wrote another ficlet! And unlike yesterday's one I even liked it, sort of.
... I am afraid I'm my worst enemy at the distraction department - if I really set down to writing, not much distracts me except for the need to have a proper talk to someone. However, it's so difficult and fearful to start...

Got *two* little one-shots done yesterday! The new season is proving very inspirational, which is great. I'm just loving it.

I have a hard time writing when there's any kind of noise going on, particularly anything that involves words (people talking, or music with vocals). So, writing while someone's watching a loud TV? Definitely would not be happening for me. I work best in a quiet room with somewhat subdued lighting, so I can let my mind wander.

I began revising another fic attempt for my exchange...didn't get much done sadly.

As littlebutfierce said, someone able to see my screen freezes me up. Music with words unless they're blasting right in my ear. The anticipation of my hubby arriving home will make it difficult to concentrate (though you'd think I'd write like mad until he actually arrived). I think those are the main ones...

Today work happened, but so did music and fic reading. I completed yesterday's goal of finishing the scene I was revising and got some feedback on it: it seems I have a problem with pacing (and thats without all the oodles of thinky bits I wanted that would have pushed the word count over). So...another round of ediing coming up.

Annoyances: people reading over my shoulder or interupting me when I'm in the middle of writing a sentence, the radio (when its not my choice but within earshot), the telephone, chores.
