I left my computer on all night to download a copy of Wikipedia. While I have no idea what I'll ever do with a copy of Wikipedia, it a) felt important that I keep one on hand and b) is honestly just really neat that I can do that.
And then I woke up, got on, opened Discord, checked an interactive-fiction server I'm in, only to find... someone advertising their AI tools. I wish we could keep generative AI out of gamedev spaces, but here we are again.

In response to a user on Reddit who wanted recs for well-written fics, here are all the fics in my database which I've tagged as exceptionally well-written. Most are also tagged as favorites (i.e. I love re-reading them) and a few are not, but their lower level of re-read appeal to me has no bearing on how well-written they are, and what doesn't grab me emotionally may be the perfect fic for you. In each case I thought the author did an amazing job with words and turns of phrase, and that these fics should be seen by more people.

Something I've been telling myself for a while, for years, was that I don't need friends. That I'm fine on my own. And I think I always realised, somewhere in me, that that was a lie.
I liked my friends in high school. All... two of them. It was just that I also got relentlessly bullied, and I think I kind of started telling myself 'pffft well you don't NEED people to like you!' in response to that, and that because 'well you don't need ANYONE!'. Except for my one close friend, of course.
But the thing with telling myself that is that it does fall apart eventually. I do need people. I love getting to talk, to share things, to interact. I'm just not very good at it, and I fear sometimes that I don't make myself presentable. Or is it that I'm just not trying hard enough with them? I wonder sometimes how I come across to other people. To know the intricacies of other's opinions on me sounds kind of cool, but I know it would be horrible. I don't want to know every corner of their opinion on me. I don't want to tear myself apart over that.

There are so many unpredictable parts of conversation sometimes. I wonder, sometimes, if I'll accidentally commit a social faux pas and spoil the mood. And have my mistake weigh on me for as long as my mind wants to spin it around for. So it tends to be easier to not say anything at all.
But then not saying anything leaves me feeling lonely again, and, well, we've looped back to the start.

I struggle to message people, sometimes just to talk with people, because I can't stop thinking about the what-ifs. What if they hate what I would say, what if that reflects poorly on me, what if they never expected a response in the first place? And of course, doing nothing and never responding doesn't... really make you a more likeable person.
Socialisation can be one of the best things in the world, so it's a shame that it makes me feel so skittish most of the time.

I obviously had a bad couple of nights in terms of sleep etc., but I'm coping mainly by trying to distract myself.

Distractions I've indulged in:

1. Palia. Still very heavily playing this, especially this weekend, making up for the fact that I didn't play much over the week.

2. Reading the tagset/request summary for [community profile] justmarriedexchange. Probably gonna sign up today or tomorrow, and yes, I did nom Palia, too.

3. Over the last week, I've watched enough Kruggsmash Dwarf Fortress videos that I had to talk myself down from getting the game (for reasons).

4. Finally watched the last season of Community. It sure is a bunch of television episodes.

5. Also catching up on the most recent season of Leverage: Redemption, and yes, there was a moment that made me scream at a pitch audible only to dogs.

6. When I fail to do these things, I read the news, which depresses me.

Last Friday was the other concert that we went to go see:

Aesthetic Perfection, doing an old-school set, plus genCAB and Whorticulture opening.

This one was cutting it a little closer to get there, since I wasn't able to leave work at all early, but luckily the class we were closing at work didn't keep me longer than usual, either. I was able to wear most of what I was going to wear to work, and change what little I needed to on the drive there, haha.

We actually wound up being down there earlier than needed, and had to circle like vultures for about fifteen minutes until one of the driving lanes turned into a parking lane at 7:00. As usual we car-bar/pre-gamed for a bit, then headed to the venue.

We weren't late this time, so we got to see our first opener, Whorticulture.

Whorticulture is a local band, and they've hit at least a little bit of success! We last saw them opening for Solar Fake (last year? the year before?). They got to play Dark Force Fest last month, which was pretty cool.

I've been impressed every time I've seen them, and even having only ever seen them live as an opening band, their songs have been memorable enough that I recognize them every time.

I always figure "hey, I should buy a CD!" and then don't have merch money, so this time was going to be the time! ...They do not have CDs at their merch table. I poked around on Bandcamp and discovered that this is because they do not have any albums... just nine singles released over the course of the last six years, haha. So I did buy their various singles, haha.

Their set was great, as they have been every time I've seen them, and even only getting to play four songs.

Three more Whorticulture pics + a music video embed

"Okay, hold on a minute. Time for an on-purpose wardrobe malfunction!"

Here's their song from last year, "Faust," which I quite like. The video is them being dramatically gothy in the Molly Brown House Museum, which is fun, too.

After that was genCAB. They were supposed to open the last time Aesthetic Perfection came, but had to cancel because the singer had Covid.

Unfortunately I found them solidly... meh. They weren't terrible, but I found myself getting a little bored. I couldn't understand more than a handful of words out of each song (just kind of nondescriptly loud and yell-y.) The singer also seemed... shy? Like he didn't want to look at the audience, ha. He's the synth player for Aesthetic Perfection while they're touring, so I feel like he's had a good tutor in stage presence, but... I mean, I'd be petrified and hate being on stage, so. Glad to have gotten to see them, but not someone I'd seek out to see again/look for as a headliner.

Three more of genCAB

Not really a "good" picture, but I liked the dramatic silhouettes.

And then, Aesthetic Perfection!

This is by far the best picture I got for the night, ha.

It was exciting to see him back, since he swore that the last tour would be the last one in the US ever. (He doesn't live in the US anymore, and he's always very open about the business side of being an artist. Basically it's just prohibitively expensive to tour, in a way that doesn't work out as a financial decision. He's said he'd be willing to tour as a supporting act, and I think he did so last year, but I wasn't interested in the artist he was supporting.)
I think the old-school thing was really meant to be just a single special show, and then expanded to a very small tour, and it was exciting for Denver to have a date added. It's very possible that this one is in fact the last tour, so I'm glad we got to go. (Or maybe there'll be another in a year or two!)

I'm actually less a fan of his older stuff than I am his like... middle stuff. I'm a 'Til Death fan, sorry. Even so, his older stuff has grown on me quite a bit.

He opened with "The Great Depression," which was a good starting song. Having the first words of a set be "Hey you motherfucking son of a bitch!" is pretty good, lol.

Got a lot of other faves from A Violent Emotion (and I'll be honest, while I knew most of the other songs, I don't have the albums they're on. I'll have to get them from Alex, as I'm sure he does, ha.) I was glad we got "Pale," which is one of my favorites from that album, as well as "The Siren" and "Living the Wasted Life."

The final encore song was "Spit It Out," which is a great energetic song to end on. I'm pretty sure that was the song he opened with at the first AP show we saw, way back at Castlemans (RIP a great venue.) The energy of the crowd screaming along with "Spit it out scream, spit it out scream!" does make it a great one to hear live.

Could have done without a small cohort of girls who came in about halfway through the set and pretty viciously shoved their way in front of me, but ah well.

Five more pictures

Bought Alex an Aesthetic Perfection shirt (since the last one he tried to get, he wound up with the wrong one and didn't realize until later. The cut of the one he got didn't work for him, so I wound up with it.)
I bought a Whorticulture shirt, since there's not an album to buy, haha. (Forever sad to have missed out on their "Goth as Fuck" shirts, which were styled to look like the "Queer as Folk" logo.)

What a day, huh? I feel like every time I try to gather my thoughts about it, I stumble across some news I haven't seen yet. I imagine a lot will change in the next few days too. I guess I'll just say for now that it's good, albeit in a bittersweet sense, to see something happening. Just. Some degree of accountability for someone.

My responses to [community profile] thefridayfive for 6/13/25.

1. What item would you be embarrassed for people to know you own?
None that I can think of.

2. What is something you splurged on just for you?
I'm on a tight budget, so I try not to splurge often. But I did cave in and buy a bunch of new funko pops last month.

3. What is something that you own with no real world value that is priceless to you?
Probably my scrapbooks and my box of keepsake items.

4. Do you collect anything?
So much stuff! My main collections are Star Wars, Comic Books, Funko Pops, Furby, My Little Pony, and dragon figurines.

5. What item belonging to a friend/family member do you covet?
My younger brother has an autographed photo of Roy Rogers that my mom gifted to him ages ago. (We had a few DVDs of old westerns while growing up and Roy Rogers was one of our favorites.) I'd love to add it to my western movie collection if he ever wants to sell it.

I haven't been able to write as much as I want this last half month. :( The first ten days was a bit biting my nails related to my work life, but that's more or less worked out for now. The rest of the time not consumed by that, there just been something happening most days-- 'tis the season that is June as everyone is either graduating, marrying, or moving. I've managed to at least keep this weekend open so I can at least try to not have my time full.

Video game wise: I caved and bought Balatro, and it's a new favorite rouge-like and time killer. I was at least smart and only got it on the switch. If I I followed my friend's bad suggestion and get it on my phone, there's no way I'd be able to actually function lmao

Reading wise: I picked up a few books from a thrift shop to spoil myself, and one of them that I picked up was The Enchantress of Florence by Salman Rushdie. It's a very fun and weird book that plays fast and loose with magical realism. One moment we have man mysteriously falling ill from a curse (but turns out he was drugged with extra strong laudnum) and the next, an emperor dreams a girl to life so hard, she's becomes real. While most of the main characters are men so far, Rushdie goes out of his way to give us some POV characters from women--namely the emperor's wives being frustrated that the "perfect dream woman" is just pieces of them patched together, the perfect dream woman having her own thoughts and wants, and--the most surprising given this book was from 2008--a sex worker being apologetically a sex worker. Even the narrator more or less spells out "sex work is real work and shouldn't be looked down on." I just think that's neat! I'm about a hundred pages into it, but have yet to officially meet the titular enchantress, though I have thoughts.

Other things I've picked up are a couple of second hand D&D books, namely the Descent into Avernus and a source book for the Sword Coast. I've poked my nose into Descent, and boy, my brain is having some fun with a lot of what-ifs, especially with how BG3 is suggests it goes.
