Discussion: when you're writing in a new fandom do you keep close to the canon?

I do have a tendency to stick close to canon, especially with new fandoms. Once I get a feel for it I might branch out a bit!

Writing was accomplished today! The never-ending fic from the past month is done! It's not edited or posted, but it is all completed.

Tomorrow, I plan to reread and edit it, in the hopes of getting it posted tomorrow, as well. After that, I'm hoping to get to the homework my friend assigned me to get me back into a different longfic.

Writing was super hard yesterday! I wrote myself into a corner, I think. A boring corner :P

I loled at fleetsparrow's "new fandoms?" because, can relate, I have been on a nostalgia tour of old fandoms for six years now. It really depends on the fandom, for me. In Teen Wolf I was like "who cares what canon was doing?" and in Batman I am like "between which comic issues exactly does this plot occur though?" XD warning, this is sometimes (always?) just procrastination!
