Discussion: word counts. Do you set a word count for your fic? do you write until you feel the fic is finished? Something else?

Sometimes I set a word count but not often, I usually just write until I've got a organic ending. For challenges with specific word counts I pay attention to the minimums and then go from there.

Almost finished with my unconventionalcourtship fic and I'm aiming to have the draft done and printed off before I need to set off for work in Elgin tonight.

Poked at a half-scene I wrote a few months back to see if adding a few more words could mean finding an ending for it!

I usually have an idea of how long a story might be based on the complexity of the concept/idea, but I don't really set a word count unless it's for an event with a minimum!

With word count unless there's a set minimum I try to let the story just come to it's natural progression. I can usually tell when the story is at it's end. (Although the event I'm currently working on, I'm trying to keep between a set amount of words just because there are several fics I want to do for it and I don't want to get burnt out. I don't want to get sick of writing this particular pairing. I've written them a lot and I don't want all of their fics to start sounding alike.)

I'm making progress on fics for said event. (although I did stop to check dreamwidth when I was meant to be doing wordsprints so I should go back to that. Oops. <__< )
