How easily distracted are you by ambient noise? Say, do you need to have absolute quiet in your room to write, or can you sit down and write while waiting for the train on a crowded, noisy platform?

Date: Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011 13:45 (UTC)Discussion topic: I tend to work better when there's ambient noise. Not listening to music, because that leads to me actually listening rather than writing, but anything else - traffic, people talking, somebody else listening to radio. I guess tuning out outside distractions helps me also tune out mental distractions. So I end up writing a lot of my fic during lectures. *innocent look*

Date: Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011 17:43 (UTC)Discussion topic: It depends on the noise and how motivated I am. Radio is usually out, but music--like classical is okay. Traffic and other noise is fine. TV and children in the other room is fine. Even TV in the same room if it's something I'm totally not interested in is tolerable. Bottom line is that it just depends on the noise and (again) how motivated or into the story I am. If I'm on a roll, I can block out almost anything.

Date: Tuesday, November 22nd, 2011 21:58 (UTC)I'm am the type of person who can be distracted by both absolute quiet or a busy crowded platform. Entirely depends in the mood I'm in. I have found simply noise (which someone here directed me to) very helpful though, especially when I'm too fidgety to settle.

Date: Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011 00:07 (UTC)I usually write to music at home (which can affect the tone of a fic in ways I wasn't expecting, judging from comments I get :D), but I do find it hard to write in ambient noise. Today I went to the library to write, and there were young children there, and I didn't get all the writing done I'd hoped to. (The kids were just acting like kids, no big deal). But I did get some done, then went home and wrote some more.
