incredibly short Discussion time:  Energy is always a huge factor in writing ability (as in the ability to get any writing done).  Even when the writing is flowing well, it's still using up energy.  So what do you do when the energy gets down to "E gallons"?

"what do you do when the energy gets down to "E gallons"?" - I've lowered the bare minimum quota of my writing sessions from 500 words to 200 words. After that's done, I let myself off the hook and roll around in thoughts about my ship and canon..

When my energy is getting low I either swap to a different project or take a break for a bit.

When I get down to the dregs of my energy, I will default to research or musing about the fic or just go do something that doesn't involve words for awhile.
