Discussion: how much canon review do you do for a fic?

For me, it depends on how recently I’ve read/watched it. If it’s something that I’ve seen or read multiple times, and the last refresh is within the last couple of years, I’ll check things on wiki or look up something in books or particular episodes.

If it’s been longer, or if it’s a canon that I’m less familiar with, then I go for a full rewatch/reread unless I’m writing about a minor character. If that’s the case, then I’ll just stick to rewatching or reading their specific scenes.

I'm always neurotic about not being OOC so I always rewatch at least a couple specific scenes for the character I'm writing.

It depends a lot on the sort of fic I'm doing, the vibe I'm going for, and my familiarity with the characters involved.

Sometimes I write directly within canon, so I'll review dialogue and scenes to make sure I include them in the fic itself when necessary. However, if it's within canon but heavily canon-divergent, I do less intensive review and reference to the text.

If it's something completely outside of the context of canon, like an AU, and I'm familiar enough with the character, then I just kind of wing it while making references to the more memorable aspects of canon that I feel the most strongly about. So long as I feel like I can maintain the integrity of the characters, I'm less stressed about religiously picking through canon.
