I sometimes use one liners and similar to difuse a tense moment, call out a character for doing/saying something silly or just to lighten the mood a bit.

I do have what I consider to be an excellent one liner but it's for a fic in my Janeway/Chakotay series that I'm technically not yet writing just adding little bits to a notebook for when I do get to it because I have maybe four fics for the series in various stages on my computer.

I sometimes use one-liners if it’s something that the character would say, or to draw attention to the ways that I’m changing the character.

I do feel like I used my best ones in a time travel fic where the time traveller was so done with the world that he was acting out - and it was one of the things that the main character noted as suspicious.

I dunno if it really counts as a "witty one-liner," but I like to use abrupt single-phrase paragraphs to break up the flow of the narrative. I like to dig into the head of the protagonist with extensive internal monologues, so it has the nice effect if an idea clicking into place or a sudden detail barrelling into the protagonist's train of thought.

Forces the reader to stop and think.
