Discussion: how much research do you put into a fic?

(also there's a lot of free weeks next month if any of you can help out with some of those, thanks 🙂)

The research I do varies from project to project, for some things I just need to get a quote from transcripts and others I need to canon review. At the moment I'm reading about wedding day customs in Native American culture(s) that I need for a fic and saving various links with notes to put into a meta to acompany the fic when I eventually get to writing it.

So much research T.T

I have to be very intentional about starting new projects because of the time I know I'm likely to end up putting in to research. I've been reading books on a particular topic pretty constantly for the better part of three years for my longfic, and that's just to inform one character who doesn't even show up all that much.

Some of it is perfectionism, and some is just curiosity. I just like learning things, and to some degree writing is my excuse to do so. And I like knowing I've done my due diligence.

I love research! I do a lot of it, at all times, during the course of writing as well as prior to writing. Even if I don't end up using what I learn, I think it having learned it is good for the depth of my fic somehow!

wrote and made some progress on a chapter I'd been stuck on! It was only a few lines, but still PROGRESS ^ o^)/ (Hoping the end is in sight so FINGERS CROSSED xD)

Edited a one shot that I had in my drafts that I didn't realize was finished and hoping to have it posted to Dreamwidth today! (It's more OC x Canon nonsense b/c OF COURSE IT IS xD)

Later on down the line I plan to write a fic where my OC takes his date to a sort of hole in the wall dive bar, so I got a chance to research some of those over the weekend and it was actually hella cool! :D
