I somehow managed to almost miss a day on my topics list *sheepish grin* so today it's the flamingo :)

How do you feel when you look for fic in your fandom(s) and find that the biggest majority of them are about the one pairing you cannot stand?
If you couldn't find a fic without them what would you do? try looking elsewhere, write something with the pairing you like, or persevere and read what there is.

I have a fandom like that, and what I usually end up doing is writing more of my own fic that features other pairings.

When I first got into the Sharpe fandom, all the fics were Sharpe/Harper. I went along with it, though I never wrote anything, because although I couldn't really see it, that was the way things were.

Until I came across someone writing Sharpe/Wellington. And it just clicked for me that of course that was THE OTP of the fandom. And ever since, that's been my pairing and I just ca't stand the Sharpe/Harper one (they're friends, and close friends, but it is so obvious a pairing that it just can't be the right one, y'know?)

I still owe a fic to explain just why it's Sharpe/Wellington - even though the one I owe it to knows why! *g* Funny how that happens.

I worked on my Narcissa fic, not so much editing/revising as taking stock of what I had and what I wanted. I worked on the time line, read all separate docs of scenes, and tried to figure out where I need to go from where I am. It was quite rewarding, actually, and I'm anxious to try to fill in gaps and get the final product ready for posting.

Discussion topic...In the HP fandom, it's not a major problem. The fandom is so huge, that there're enough writers of the major pairings whether they be canon or not.

Now in the Robin Hood fandom, this was an issue. The major pairings were Marian/Robin and Marian/Guy. Unfortunately, it seemed the majority of fans preferred the M/G pairing, so those preferring M/R got short changed on either end. If you wanted to read, there wasn't as much available and if you wrote it, you didn't have many readers.

I called today's non-writing activity a break, because I consciously chose not to pursue anything that involved actual writing. I did, however, do some planning and set some goals for something I want to start working on soon, so I wasn't totally ignoring the fact that writing is out there waiting for me to pay attention to it.

Got a lot done on a kink meme fill that's ongoing, and edited what I already have written. Will post later or tomorrow depending on how LJ is acting. Took a long Tumblr break but will get back to the writing after dinner.

I posted my way-overdue help_japan fic at last!!! \o/ Thinking good thoughts for [personal profile] bay_alexison on hers cuz we've been commiserating on having unfinished fics for this auction for months.

In addition to that, I edited a fic that's almost ready to post (needs a title...) & drafted another ficlet. Hooray!

I think whether or not I read fics for a pairing I don't like depends on how desperate I am for fic, since I'm in all small fandoms. Then again, now that I think about it, I never end up reading them; if that's all that's in a fandom (&/or they're just really badly written) I don't read fic in that fandom. & try harder to write it.

Congrats on posting and finishing your help_japan fic! :D Man, I really need to get back writing mine. Close to 10,000 words and I still got a lot of ground to cover! D: Real life had been hectic for me the past several days. ;_;

Thank you! & also, go go go on yours! Though given how long yours sounds, I think you have way more of an excuse for not finishing it yet than I did -- mine had to be only a minimum of 1000 words & ended up being under 4000. >_<

I hope RL gives you some fic time soon!!!

No writing done today. Had been busy with chores, researching a couple things for my dad, and away most of the evening. Since littlebutfierce got her help_japan fic done, I'm going to try to get some of it written tomorrow.

For the fandoms I'm in I'm not skewed over the pairings I can't stand. People will ship with whomever they want. There might be a couple pairings I want to see more of, so I would sometimes look elsewhere or just get what I can considering I had been too busy to sit down and read now these days.

Im still writing when I can fit it in, but without enough time/privacy for ediing. Hope the editing job won't be too huge when I do finally get the time.

I haven't had the flamingo's problem yet. Usually Ive liked the most popular pairings or there's enough variety about the fandom for it not to bother me. I do think that fic without any pairing tends to get less attention though - and possibly attracts a different audience.

Luckily, my OTP in my primary fandom is the most-popular. Still, not a lot of it is great, and so I read a lot of crappy stuff :(

In a side fandom, though, there's almost no fic for my favorite pairing!! *sadface*

As for check-in... I WROTE yesterday!!!!! <3 <3 <3 Also did some research and decided it was far too much effort to include, so I'm fading to the next scene rather than trying to make it work. So, I'd say I'm about... 1/7th of the way through 3ships :D

No writing today. ;_; My brother stayed in town longer than I thought he would and demanded all of my non-work time today be devoted to video games.

As for the discussion question - this has happened to me before, with a side of my favorite pairing being extremely rare. I was frustrated by it, but hey, there's not much you can do. I usually wound up sticking to genfic and fics with alternate pairings. And, of course, falling upon fics for my rarepair and devouring them whenever I found one (even though they were all pretty uniformly terrible, but that was fine because OMG THEY EXIST). I tried my hand at writing a few, but I procrastinated on them long enough that I eventually lost interest in the fandom.

Fortunately, that's not so much an issue in my current fandom, because my OTP actually happens to be one of the more popular ones, and the only pairing I absolutely refuse to read (because it pairs the canonical lesbian with the male lead, DNW - he has a whole harem to choose from, leave the f/f alooooone) is, while not uncommon, not exactly popular.

It's usually not an issue either way, though, because I'm usually mellow enough to give most anything a try.

I finally got back to writing after the Christmas chaos, and managed to complete my month's word count goal (and go a little over). I also got through a major plot point that's been 40,000 words in the making. Yay! It's all downhill from here.

I'm fairly flexible about what pairings I'll read, but if I can't find what I want for my OTP, I tend to write it myself. I know some people don't like reading their own work, or at least not on the same level that they like reading other people's, but I enjoy it, even if my inner editor can never put her red pen down.

Me too! I would still prefer to read other people's (in addition to writing my own, which I enjoy) -- but writing my own sometimes has the bonus of making other people in the fandom consider the pairing (or... what's the phrasing if it's an OT3?). & sometimes then they even start writing it. \o/

& yaaaaay for finishing your monthly word count!!

Yes, if you can convince other people to come over to your ship, that's the best! Reviews from someone saying that they never read this pairing, but my story made them like it are always fantastic.

...Trioing? XP Maybe stick with pairing.

This drove me out of a particular fandom years ago, mainly because not just the fic but the meta was inundated with a pairing that I started out liking, and eventually hated. The weird thing is, if the fandom had been different I might have ended up loving that pairing, at least for about 2/3 the duration of the canon.
