How's it going today?
I somehow managed to almost miss a day on my topics list *sheepish grin* so today it's the flamingo :)

How do you feel when you look for fic in your fandom(s) and find that the biggest majority of them are about the one pairing you cannot stand?
If you couldn't find a fic without them what would you do? try looking elsewhere, write something with the pairing you like, or persevere and read what there is.

Date: Monday, December 26th, 2011 21:24 (UTC)Until I came across someone writing Sharpe/Wellington. And it just clicked for me that of course that was THE OTP of the fandom. And ever since, that's been my pairing and I just ca't stand the Sharpe/Harper one (they're friends, and close friends, but it is so obvious a pairing that it just can't be the right one, y'know?)
I still owe a fic to explain just why it's Sharpe/Wellington - even though the one I owe it to knows why! *g* Funny how that happens.

Date: Monday, December 26th, 2011 21:32 (UTC)Discussion topic...In the HP fandom, it's not a major problem. The fandom is so huge, that there're enough writers of the major pairings whether they be canon or not.
Now in the Robin Hood fandom, this was an issue. The major pairings were Marian/Robin and Marian/Guy. Unfortunately, it seemed the majority of fans preferred the M/G pairing, so those preferring M/R got short changed on either end. If you wanted to read, there wasn't as much available and if you wrote it, you didn't have many readers.

Date: Tuesday, December 27th, 2011 00:41 (UTC)In addition to that, I edited a fic that's almost ready to post (needs a title...) & drafted another ficlet. Hooray!
I think whether or not I read fics for a pairing I don't like depends on how desperate I am for fic, since I'm in all small fandoms. Then again, now that I think about it, I never end up reading them; if that's all that's in a fandom (&/or they're just really badly written) I don't read fic in that fandom. & try harder to write it.

Date: Tuesday, December 27th, 2011 06:07 (UTC)For the fandoms I'm in I'm not skewed over the pairings I can't stand. People will ship with whomever they want. There might be a couple pairings I want to see more of, so I would sometimes look elsewhere or just get what I can considering I had been too busy to sit down and read now these days.

Date: Tuesday, December 27th, 2011 06:56 (UTC)I haven't had the flamingo's problem yet. Usually Ive liked the most popular pairings or there's enough variety about the fandom for it not to bother me. I do think that fic without any pairing tends to get less attention though - and possibly attracts a different audience.

Date: Tuesday, December 27th, 2011 07:30 (UTC)In a side fandom, though, there's almost no fic for my favorite pairing!! *sadface*
As for check-in... I WROTE yesterday!!!!! <3 <3 <3 Also did some research and decided it was far too much effort to include, so I'm fading to the next scene rather than trying to make it work. So, I'd say I'm about... 1/7th of the way through 3ships :D

Date: Tuesday, December 27th, 2011 07:54 (UTC)As for the discussion question - this has happened to me before, with a side of my favorite pairing being extremely rare. I was frustrated by it, but hey, there's not much you can do. I usually wound up sticking to genfic and fics with alternate pairings. And, of course, falling upon fics for my rarepair and devouring them whenever I found one (even though they were all pretty uniformly terrible, but that was fine because OMG THEY EXIST). I tried my hand at writing a few, but I procrastinated on them long enough that I eventually lost interest in the fandom.
Fortunately, that's not so much an issue in my current fandom, because my OTP actually happens to be one of the more popular ones, and the only pairing I absolutely refuse to read (because it pairs the canonical lesbian with the male lead, DNW - he has a whole harem to choose from, leave the f/f alooooone) is, while not uncommon, not exactly popular.
It's usually not an issue either way, though, because I'm usually mellow enough to give most anything a try.

Date: Tuesday, December 27th, 2011 08:02 (UTC)I'm fairly flexible about what pairings I'll read, but if I can't find what I want for my OTP, I tend to write it myself. I know some people don't like reading their own work, or at least not on the same level that they like reading other people's, but I enjoy it, even if my inner editor can never put her red pen down.

Date: Tuesday, December 27th, 2011 14:26 (UTC)Me too! I would still prefer to read other people's (in addition to writing my own, which I enjoy) -- but writing my own sometimes has the bonus of making other people in the fandom consider the pairing (or... what's the phrasing if it's an OT3?). & sometimes then they even start writing it. \o/
& yaaaaay for finishing your monthly word count!!
