How is everyone feeling today?
Today's discussion again come from fanfic flamingo:

[READ ALTERNATE INTERPRETATION OF EPISODE YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED YET (Fanfic Flamningo) WATCH EPISODE: THIS DOESN’T MAKE ANY SENSE!]
Not just the odd episode, but do you ever find that you get confused if you've not read/watched/listened to canon for a while after reading a lot of fic?

If we were near each other physically, I'd stab him lots.

As for Mr. Flamingo,
REPLACE EPISODE WITH SEASON, PLZ.
How can I LOVE a character in a majority of fic, and then hate him in canon?

Date: Thursday, January 26th, 2012 11:45 (UTC)My fic reaches 5.3K nicely, and of course I' inspired to completely rewrite a large part of the fic. I'm still pondering.
I'm also thinking about a paranormal cop AU sequel set after my fic in progress. Is anyone interested in helping brainstorming this with me? Fandom knowledge is unnecessary. I'll be grateful to anyone who ay offer.

Date: Thursday, January 26th, 2012 14:05 (UTC)Re: today's Fanfic Flamingo... I don't find this much of a problem, actually. For some reason I have no problem keeping fanon and canon separate and taking in canon on its own terms, even if I've been away from it for a while.

Date: Thursday, January 26th, 2012 14:08 (UTC)I remember once following someone's fic without being familiar with the canon behind it -- and when I finally saw the canon episodes, I realized I much preferred the fic writer's portrayal of one of the characters as opposed to canon!
I sometimes find myself forgetting that my own favorite character who features in many of my WIPs and other fic is actually dead in canon, so it is a cold dash of reality when I get back into canon. ;-)

Date: Thursday, January 26th, 2012 20:37 (UTC)I havn't had the experience in the discussion, though sometimes I'm tempted to read fic on fandoms I know nothing about, so I guess it might happen soon.
Ive found a new toy. Its a very simple 'bot plot generator for songwriters. I can see how the idea could work for ficlets too though.

Date: Thursday, January 26th, 2012 21:39 (UTC)As for the flamingo, that has happened to me a few times, especially in animanga fandoms. Anime goes one way, manga goes another and there I am confused at how Greed=Ling and Roy doesn't have an eyepatch or why Shion isn't as sociopathic as he should be given that someone has hurt his Nezumi.
I admit that fic does influence me. I have a tendency to go long periods of time not watching a program then go on a binge (ex. me and my kids for that past 2 weeks watched 120 episodes of One Piece, to get caught up, before that we watched 2 seasons of Merlin) but I continue to dabble in fandom, and read new stories that pop up. And then when I do watch the show, I'm like, it was better when Merlin was the son of some elvin king as oppose to a hemit living in a cave.

Date: Friday, January 27th, 2012 07:46 (UTC)As far as the flamingo goes, I don't usually have a problem with that. My brain seems to compartmentalize everything so that the various interpretations of canon are all in neatly labelled little boxes; i.e., "canon," "fanon," "personal headcanon," "fresh new take," "what is this I don't even." Although I do like to regularly refresh myself on whichever canon I happen to be writing for at the moment because I'm paranoid about getting something egregiously wrong. (My current fandom actually drove me to create an honorific chart so that I wouldn't have to constantly flip through every volume of the manga to look for the one scene where character #35 interacted with character #62 and whether they used "-san" or "-kun." It was time consuming, but totally worth it for a series with a cast that big.)
