Discussion question:

How often do you write fic while at work/in class?

I've written a total of ~2000 words today, and put up a new chapter of "Three and a Half Days" plus another stand-alone short, "Canzone" (sequel to "Overture").

I'm self-employed and work from home, so if an idea or a stretch of dialogue suddenly strikes me I'm usually free to stop and write it down. :)

Heh! Thanks. :)

(Actually I get most of my writing done first thing in the morning, before tackling my paying work. I'm usually able to devote at least a couple of hours to it, which (if I'm on a roll) can add up to quite a word count.)

The idea of doing anything in the morning makes me dizzy. XD I am not good at mornings.

Today's progress...

Yuujinchou Exchange (due Mar 17 - 1K word min): 325 new words. I think I've gotten the ending worked out. Now to keep drafting. I'm to the part where the tension is climbing, so the pressure is on to make sure it grows at a steady pace and doesn't fall flat. I know, I know, word dump first, edit later! Current word count: 4,053

Help_Japan (due 18 years ago - 750 word min): No new words. Current word count: 3,666

I do manual labor and drive a truck, so unfortunately I can't write while working (though I'm nearly always mulling something over as I go). One of my biggest issues, actually, is that I'll have an idea on the job and not be able to make notes until an hour or more later, so often times I forget that bit of dialogue I came up with )or whatever else it was) by the time my hands are free. Very frustrating!

I am v. glad! I used to temp in an office that dealt w/truck safety over here, & I'd hear about truck drivers doing things like through checkpoints WHILE WATCHING A DVD & thinking that was totally A-OK! (or, say, punching the inspector when they noticed that the speed/mileage meter on the truck had been tampered w/.) ^^;;;;

Yay for figuring out the ending of your Natsume fic!! & yes, word dump!

Oh I know how idiot some of these douches are. Even passenger vehicles scare me with all the texting and reading and makeup application and ...

I have considered getting one of those little mini-recorder things to talk into when an idea strikes, but it hasn't been a super priority since I don't write that much. But maybe one day I'll get one?

I keep doing the "just keep swimming" chant, haha. Word dump!

I hear ya. I always find traveling by bus on the highway somewhat... intimidating? Because you're up high so you can look into the trucks and see what the drivers are doing. And a lot of them are doing anything but keeping their attention on the road. One dude I spotted was reading the newspaper with one hand. Drinking coffee and eating a danish with the other. His right leg was up on the dashboard and he was steering with his left knee propped up against the steering-wheel.

No wonder trucks are regularly involved in some pretty damn awful accidents, like when they plow up and over a queue of cars. :-(

A Dictaphone might do the trick for those bits and pieces, though. :-)

People in general scare me when it comes to sharing the road. Between the dangerous distractions, tunnel vision (did you check your mirror before you cut me off in your compact car?), and complete ignorance/abandonment of driving law, it's a wonder we're not all dead yet via auto accident! <-- I can rant on this subject for days, haha

I have considered one, but I've not bought one either. Maybe I'll ask for one for my birthday or something!

Yeah, people are scary in traffic. I keep longing for the day when either Google's robot cars arrive, or we get cars in general exchanged for those nifty PRT's that started out life in Heathrow.

Whenever I say this and people go: "But, OMG, aren't you afraid there'll be a glitch?" I tend to laugh. Because, really? There is no error quite like human error when you're driving a vehicle bigger than a bicycle...

Well I officially started a new story last night, and not the one I expected to start. It ambushed me, so I just started writing out the scenes that were playing out in my head. 700-ish words of pure angst. Here's an important safety tip, in case you wondered: if you ever find yourself traveling with a Time Lord you do NOT want the TARDIS to get pissed at you. Some of them can apparently be vindictive. I'm feeling very sorry for my character, who is in the process of having her life systematically destroyed as the result of a jealous, pissed-off TARDIS. Whee!

As to the question, not at all, these days. The most I've done in years is jot a quick note so I don't forget something. Sometimes I miss the days when I was a phone receptionist, because I wrote and wrote and wrote while working. But then I remember the actual job and the actual pay and... not so much. :)

Editing. Squishy fic is nice to deal w/right now. I have the v. barest bones of my Natsume exchange fic, though I think some more bits have to be added in. Still, there is a story there! In dire need of more editing, but it's there!

I rarely write fic at work, partly because I always have nosy coworkers sitting near me, but over the past week (while the nosiest/closest has been out of the office) I've gotten down a few thousand words during the day. Also b/c I get into work early I've been trying to get my 750 Words done in the morning, which seems to be working fairly well.

Barest bones is good, though, because there's something to build onto!

908 words, and the group's run into Penelope-the-witch and Morgan-her-warrior-bodyguard. Needless to say, Hotch is somewhat... conflicted about killing Penelope... :-D

I've written at work. One of my stories was written almost entirely during an extremely slow summer at work. I would never write in class, however - classwork is for knitting! ;-)

I haven't done any writing today because I'm not feeling that great, but I finally have a solid idea for where i"m going to take my fic, so hopefully that counts for something.

I'm a college student, so I actually write in class all the time. I'm one of those students who generally does the reading before the lecture, so once i"m in class having it explained once is enough for me, which leaves a lot of time to write in between topics/activities.
