Another day has come and gone, so now it's time to check in.

How many new words did you write today? Did you reach your goal? Were you editing instead? Researching? Or was today a day of rest?

When writing we're often encouraged to "paint a picture with our words" to help the reader visualize a scene. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, but we can further enrich the atmosphere and our description by including the other four senses. This can be very challenging, but it can really bring a story to life, too.

For this exercise, try to write a descriptive paragraph using all five senses: Sight, Sound, Smell, Touch, and Taste. Even if it's completely overkill, be sure to include at least one example of each sense as you let the reader experience the scene.

Feel free to post your results here if you wish (or link us to them).

Today I wrote about 1000 words worth of prose and did a fair amount of universe building (including knocking together the magical system for the Lethe!verse, huzzah!), but I want to finish a short story today and will have to get cracking if I'm going to get that done.

That's an interesting writing exercise indeed! I will have to try it sometime. :)

I'm trying to get motivated to do something writing related but it's not going well.

This exercise is a good reminder to me to involve a wider range of senses as I write. I think I'm going to try it out with a smallish scene I have been contemplating for a short challenge piece. Maybe this is what I need to get motivated today! :-D

Update! Wrote and posted a ~1700 word Lethe!verse story, "Unknown", which deals with the mystery of dreams. It contains a form of today's exercise when Bob's physical reaction to a nightmare is described. :)

I didn't get much writing done at all today; I think I'm getting burned out on my current project. I did, however, work on my outline! Which is good, because it sorely needed it, and now I know that this story is going to take roughly 13 chapters to finish. Excite! Now if only I can get past this general "uuuugh" feeling I get whenever I try to actually write any of it...
