Hi there. I hope the writing has been going well today. As we come to the end of the month, how are are you doing on the goals you set yourself at the start? And how does this affect what you are planning for next month?
For discussion:
How do you decide when a story is ready to post online?
When you can’t think of any more?
When its the deadline?
When at least 3 betas have been over it?
When you are fed up with it?

Date: Thursday, May 31st, 2012 21:17 (UTC)My goal for the month was to post four chapters for Pull the Stars from the Sky. I'm gonna call that a win--I've only posted 3, but #4 is, as I said, pretty darn close to ready for a beta. :) Hooray! \o/
For me, a story or chapter is ready as soon as I'm tired of looking at it. ;) Although really, I do tend to rush more than I probably should, because I get such a high from posting. Right now, I finish a chapter/story, send it off to beta LIKE RIGHT AWAY (I should maybe stop that and consider it a little more). I have two or three folks who look at my stuff, depending, and all they all give excellent feedback, which sometimes entails a lot of rewriting. Once that's done, I may or may not send it back for a reread, then I'll post.
This is for longer form stuff, of course. For short pieces, I often just dash it off and then post it. :)

Date: Friday, June 1st, 2012 02:50 (UTC)I post when I feel I'm done, when I feel I've accomplished what I set out to do. I have someone read it over—copy edit—and that's about it. Sometimes I'll discuss plot and characterization as I go but I get edited for work, I really don't have fun with it in my fandom writing. :)

Date: Friday, June 1st, 2012 03:04 (UTC)I usually have a good feel for when a chapter or a tale is complete; I'll often run it by a person or two for a bit of beta work, but nothing major, since I do most of my own editing as I go. Deadlines are helpful to me, and I usually wait until the last minute to get motivated!

Date: Friday, June 1st, 2012 03:43 (UTC)As for the 'done' point, it's usually like coming close to an edge in my mind; when I reach the point when I'm just quibbling with myself about word placement and checking the thesaurus too often, I'll stop writing.

Date: Friday, June 1st, 2012 05:45 (UTC)As for this month I got a couple goals accomplished, one is which getting Chapter Six of my FMA Big Bang posted and some of help_japan written (though not much).
A story/chapter is done most of the time when one or two betas, depending on nature of work, looks through it and I make the necessary changes. Sometimes I might have my beta(s) looked over a scene/part once more, but otherwise that doesn't happen too often.
