Today's discussion question: How long does it take for you to feel comfortable writing in a new fandom? Does it vary by fandom? Is there a particular kind of fic (ie porn) that you tend to find yourself writing first?

Not got much writing in yet today but I have been researching. Yesterday I was making some notes from the eps I need for timeline purposes for a 3 part series.

It varies from fandom to fandom, with some fandoms I can just jump right in with fic and with others I tend to wait till I've seen enough eps to feel able to write the characters. Sometimes I don't bother with fic at all.

Only wrote three paragraphs, but it merits the "great" anyway because, unlike the last two attempts to write those three paragraphs, this attempt was not a hideous misbegotten failure on all levels of directness, plot furtherance, and characterisation. I think I'm back on track!

Re: fandoms, it varies wildly from fandom to fandom! There are some fandoms I'd never be comfortable writing, because my awe at how well it was done in canon precludes inflicting my own attempts upon it!

Less subjectively, perhaps, some canons are just too... complete? Contained? They lack the open spaces and unexplored or dropped threads that fanfic flourishes in.

I wrote today! Words! Hundreds of them! (For a fic that's supposed to be on the back burner but keeps haunting my brain anyway.) The fic I meant to finish this month is still getting nowhere, though.

Today I posted a 2800-word set of ReBoot fics, basically a collection of drabbles and shorts that are too small/fragmentary to fit anywhere else. I also did a color job on some sprite!Megabyte fan art that a fan of my work very kindly created for me, which was a lot of fun!

I'm usually very careful until I feel I have a decent grasp of the fandom's canon -- and then I jump in with both feet! :) The kind of fic varies depending on what aspect of the fandom appeals to me/strikes me most powerfully first.

I'm having trouble buckling down to work on actual writing, for no apparent reason. Just procrastinating, I guess! So I spent the time in editing rather than writing, but it was good -- except when I was goofing off by surfing and playing computer games instead of doing anything writerly. ;-)

I have trouble writing in a new fandom, because I feel like I don't know enough about it to write fully and properly. But sometimes the nature of the story that grabs me in a new fandom makes it possible to get past that hurdle. There are a couple of fandoms that I have good story ideas for that I haven't jumped into yet, mostly because of the time it would take to really figure out them out. Once I get some of my long-standing WIPs out of the way, I will take the time and try to delve into some new territory, I think.
