For discussion, let's have a hypothetical situation. You are in the middle of a WIP when along comes a new, tempting fandom. What do you do with your current WIP? Abandon it? Finish it even if it means ignoring all those new plot bunnies? Set it aside for a while and come back to it later when the honeymoon period with the new fandom is over? Something else? Inquiring minds want to know.

I've written almost 2,000 words so far today with no sign of losing steam. I've also done some editing on the current chapter of my big WIP (which is also what I've been writing for). If I don't get interrupted or otherwise lose momentum, I'm looking at being able to finish and post this sucker sometime this week, if not tonight! All in all, I'm very pleased with how my writing is going today, especially since getting my 500 words a day has sucked for the past few days.

I've actually had the hypothetical situation from the discussion question happen to me before... For me the answer is usually just that I add more WIPs, or start drabbling and reading in the new fandom, while still plugging away at my old WIPs (even if they are now on the back burner while the new fandom takes priority). I have abandoned unfinished works in the past, but I hate doing it and always try to finish at some point unless the story idea itself just turns out to be completely unworkable.

As long as there's no deadline I'm working towards (or it's not immediate) I'll write for the new fandom/idea. I find it better to go where your enthusiasm is :D Or I'm just easily distracted...explains why I have so many abandoned wips.

Had that happen. If the plot bunny for the new love is a shortie, then I write it. It's a good 'palate cleanser' for the old love to get the new obsession out of the way.

I didn't actually write today, but I wrote very late last night -- finishing up a little thing of 965 words. It got posted today. I went on to do some research for another little thing I decided to work on. My big goal for the month has turned out not to be such a big goal after all, since the reason for pushing to work on it is no longer in effect, so I can take my time and relax a bit with that WIP! Thus I turn to shorter, easier things. ;-)

I never ignore a new plot bunny. I will play with it, doing research, plotting, outlining, whatever it takes to keep that bunny happy, even if it means neglecting my current project for a bit. I tend to work on many projects at once, so none of them are ever fully set aside. However, with new plot bunnies, once I get the ideas down and outlined, I don't necessarily write it until later. As long as I have enough notes down that I can pick it up again whenever I want to, I am fine with leaving it and going back to the project at hand.

New plotbunnies with new fandoms? Uuuusually the other WIP gets set aside while I mess up the new sandbox. It's only if I'm really into a story I'm writing that I'll ignore the new plunnies.

Today I... well. I suppose 'yesterday', really 's why it's here on this post, but I think it was mostly after midnight and I just fell asleep after... mostly I squeed. And plotted with another person. And squeed about the plotting. It was all Bionicle, I had fun, and before I went to sleep I even wrote a little on what I've affectionately termed my 'Tacky Takua' AU. This being the one where he's all white and shiny gold because one too many bumps to the head made him lose the ability to disguise his colors... :D

Eeek the WIP situation is what exactly happened to me these past few days. There's just so many ideas bombarding me from the side of the shiny new fandom that working on my current WIPs feels forced. What I did is start working on the shiny new ideas anyway -- shiny or not the ideas are more half-baked than anything so it will still take time wrapping those up while I continue to jot down something for my not-so-new fandom.
